2018 Onondaga County Maple School

THIS Saturday, November 17, 2018, 8:30 AM - 12:15 PM

This year's maple school will focus on some essentials for small and beginning producers hoping to make their business or hobby more profitable and/or manageable.

Reverse osmosis technology concentrates the sugar in your sap, reducing boiling time. This efficiency can make your operation more profitable and even give you a little free time during maple season - to sleep! And if you are planning to sell your syrup, you have to filter and grade it!

Steve Childs from the Cornell Maple Program will join us at the NYS Fairgrounds, Wegman's Kitchen to demystify these necessary skills. The workshop will be all indoors. Morning refreshments will be served.

Arrive at 8:30 a.m. for refreshments and we will begin at 9 am with the program.

Registration is required at this link: https://reg.cce.cornell.edu/OnondagaMaple2018_231

Hope to see you there!

A great big THANK YOU to Mat Webber, who donated garlic to the SYRAPP program!
We completed garlic planting at the Salt City Harvest Farm
during the second week of November.
Featured Success Story:
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Onondaga County in partnership with the Town of Skaneateles and Skaneateles Lake Association held an informational forum on Landscaping for Water Quality in Skaneateles on October 23rd, 2018.

This event was held to connect residents in the Skaneateles watershed to information and resources on how to make decisions on their property that reduce the amount of harmful surface water runoff that leaves their property and enters Skaneateles Lake.

Over 200 participants attended and learned steps like how to design a landscape that works with nature, how to naturalize shorelines, steps to plant more trees and shrubs without losing space to recreate, and resources to select the best native species to plant, where, and why.

The event included presentations on from NYSDEC, Environmental Engineer Matt Biondolillo, and native plants expert Don Leopold from SUNY ESF. All attendees received easy to use CCE resources ‘Landscaping for Water Quality’ booklet and were able to meet almost a dozen local nurseries specializing in native plants who tabled during the event. Special thanks to Envirothon/ Environmental Club Advisor Mr. Rick Garrett of Skaneateles High School and his students who volunteered to help the event run smoothly.
