RRID Newsletter November 2018

Welcome to Addgene!

We are pleased to announce that a Addgene joins the RRID family of resources.
Addgene is a non for profit company whose goal is to facilitate the exchange of genetic material between laboratories by offering plasmids and their associated cloning data to not-for-profit laboratories around the world. Addgene has received deposits from over 1700 individual laboratories and has sent out more than 1 million plasmids!

Nature Publishing Group, which has updated the instructions to authors centrally to include RRIDs last month, requested that the RRID initiative include Addgene.

After several months of discussions, Addgene is joining the RRID initiative on Monday November 19th. The clear benefit to the RRID initiative is that Addgene is the source for nearly all plasmids used in the literature. The benefit to Addgene is that journals will help to enforce one, consistent across publishers, standard means of citing the use of plasmids. This is a win-win.

Concrete steps taken for success of Addgene integration:

* The RRID portal includes Addgene plasmids, so authors can look up any Addgene plasmid.
* Plasmids have been added to the SciCrunch resolver service making robot lookup possible.

* Addgene has been added to the RRID curation workflow and tool integration is imminent.
* Addgene has changed their website to include RRID syntax on every page.
* Addgene help staff have been 'in the loop' so they can help authors with RRID syntax questions.
* Addgene and SciCrunch will announce changes in public on Tuesday and will cross-promote the blogs.

Our goal at the Resource Identification Initiative continues to be improving 'findability' for readers and tracking for repositories. In November, we will welcome plasmids into the RRID family.
