Many parishioners wrote to Cardinal DiNardo, president of the USCCB.
Read two of those letters here and here.
On Sunday afternoon, St. Vincent's offered hospitality to parishioners and friends from Holy Trinity Church (Georgetown), St. Ignatius, and St. Matthew Churches in Baltimore. They set off on a rosary walk to the Basilica, where they posted a copy of 5 Theses on the doors and participated in the 4:30 Mass.
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, parishioners and friends watched the live-streamed portions of the USCCB assembly. Between sessions, some walked to the Marriott Waterfront hotel, where the bishops were meeting, to pray and join others in witness and demonstration. Others watched from home.
If you watched any portion of the USCCB proceedings, and took notes, St. V's Ad Hoc Committee on Church Reform 2018 asks that you send your notes to be shared and sent on to the bishops.
Links to the sessions, a copy of the letter from St. V's to the bishops, and other material on the crisis in the Church may be found on our website.
At Tuesday evening's (Nov. 13) Parish Council Meeting, Amber Hendricks, chair of the Ad Hoc Committee, summed up the actions of the committee to date. There was discussion about the next steps for the committee, and the needs or expectations of the parish around this topic. The committee will meet next on Friday, November 30 at 4:30 PM.

The Education & Enrichment Committee presents "Up."
Date: THIS Sunday, November 18
Time: After 9:30 Mass
Place: In the Undercroft
Event: Potluck Lunch and a Movie
The final film in our animated film series will be the delightful film UP. We’ll begin with lunch. All food items should be placed on the stage. Please invite your friends, relatives and neighbors. Hope to see you there!
"Up is a film about getting old, about regret and about realising that life is messy and out of control, as much as you might try to make it otherwise. But it’s also a film about love, compassion and making sure that every day counts."
(Tess Riley, The Guardian)

…in the words of
the Gospel of Mark 13:28
Jesus said to his disciples,
'Learn a lesson from the fig tree.
When its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves,
you know that summer is near.’
…in another’s words,
a prayer-poem –
let me find a fig tree
let me lie beneath it
let me set my gaze upward
to be taught
some new mystery
a query interrupts:
is it only the fig tree
full of such promise
[a curious “amen”]
Fr.. Ray
…now in your own words,
a prayer-poem –

The Married
Couples Group
|
|
A parishioner's musings on her time with the Married Couple's Group:
The Couples' Group is a fun group but, at the same time, it is a helpful one. I have belonged to it through two husbands :) so that shows you how much I appreciate it. We generally have a book that the presentations are (sometimes loosely) based upon. If the book is not exactly perfect in our estimation, the presenting couple tweaks it. The topics range from romantic love to praying together to not clobbering each other!
One of Denny and my favorite topics was taking a careful look at our expectations of our partner. It encouraged one not to expect that person who was originally so romantic and absolutely perfect to NOT be all that you fell madly in love with. It made you stop and think about how totally unrealistic we can sometimes be as we are all just human beings...even if you did think you married an angel.
We almost always begin with a prayer or thought-provoking poem, song, etc to set the tone. We then have a large group presentation (or other unique idea); then we break into small groups or just couples; and lastly, a song or some wise words to close...followed of course by wine and food! They are always enjoyable and sometimes enlightening!

We have two written messages from Archbishop Lori to share with the parish, as well as his video message (also in this newsletter).
1. A statement given at the USCCB Monday morning plenary session.
[The clergy and laity of my diocese] are hurting and angry and they want change. And they rightly demanded it yesterday. They want greater transparency, greater lay involvement—especially of women, and they want bishops to be held accountable the same way we hold others in ministry accountable. Read the rest here.
2. On Missionary Discipleship in Crisis: I write to offer further reflections on the ongoing crisis in the Catholic Church, particularly on how it affects our local Church in Baltimore. First, I offer my sincere apology to those who have been wounded. Second, I ask for your mercy and charity, as I know these wounds run deep and trust has been broken. Much of what follows is rooted in comments you shared with me after Masses and during recent listening sessions. . . Read more
