MEET THE ARTIST

Jean Katambayi
Jean Katambayi Mukendi is a Congolese artist  impassioned by technology, mechanics, geometry and electricity. In his work he combines influences from daily life with experience gained from his training as electrician. He creates fragile and complex installations driven by sophisticated electrical mechanisms. His technological discoveries are part of a search for solutions to social problems in current Congolese society.
Jean Katambayi is our final Artist in Resident of the year. Follow us on instagram (@nafasiartspace) and Facebook for all the updates his activities.

RECENT EVENTS
TFL Short Films Night
On 13 November 2018, Tanzania film lab screened several short films at Nafasi Art Space, including Leah, Supa Mama, and Hatia. It was inspiring to see young, homegrown talents using their passion and creativity to tell stories that reflect the realities of Tanzanian life. Each film left enough space for the audience to reflect and question, and avoided offering artificial exposition or pedantic “resolutions”. For this reason, they had all the more impact, as they touched on important social issues such as FGM, domestic abuse, and heath care.

Tanzania Film Lab screenings at Nafasi Art Space take place at 7.30 pm on every second Tuesday of the month.

Boda Boda Film Lounge
A cross-continental video art that took place at over 15 spaces across the African Continent. On 16th November '18, we showcased (screenings) of a series of 10 video art pieces from the continent responding to the set themes of migration, neo-colonialism, globalism, technology creep, and heartbreak all under the theme "Soft Powers"
The Boda Boda Lounge festival is based on the conviction that video art can create exchanges between different contexts in Africa that allow both the transcending of physical boundaries and the creation of an intimate atmosphere for introspection and contemplation.
The films exhibited the enormous range of film talent on the continent and we already looking forward to next years edition.
