Represent.

Through my design work in recent years, the topics of diversity, inclusion, and representation are subjects that have become near and dear to my heart. Projects like Helena Price's Techies Project, Grace Bonney's book In the Company of Women, Tim Goodman + Amélie Lamont's People of Craft, Julia Rothman + Wendy McNaughton's Women Who Draw, and TONAL's culturally diverse stock imagery were just a few that helped open my eyes to how limiting the view in main stream media and society can be, littered by excuses.

I hardly can pretend to fully comprehend the hurdles and road blocks that many people face, but I can understand what it's like to be an outsider from living abroad. While the topics of diversity, inclusion, and representation are topics that may seem outside of travel at first glance, they're also the exact reason that I think travel is so important—to understand how other people live. Let's face it, no one has it 100% figured out, and we all could look to learn from another perspective. This week's round up is a small sampling of things on my mind to help us break out of our bubble a bit more.

Sometimes I ask myself, is this really 2018?!?! But then there are exciting glimpses into what the future may hold...

Observe.

New Yorker cover by Barry Blitt.

When new players enter the room the status quo becomes more apparent. I'm not even talking about politics here, it's about representation and adding new voices to the conversation.

When was the last time you paused to reflect to consider the bubble you live in work in?

Designed to connect.

Congresswoman Elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez first came onto my radar through the graphic design of her powerful grassroots campaign (designed by Tandem NYC). Everything she does is designed to reach a wider audience. This week she started using the app Clipomatic which adds captioning to the videos she shares on Instagram Stories. It benefits those who are hearing impaired, but also those of us who prefer to keep the sound off on their phones.

Read.

Mismatch: How Inclusion Shapes Design is a new book by Kat Holmes, addressing how "mismatches" in design leads to exclusion. Before the book Kat oversaw inclusive design at Microsoft, spearheading several initiatives including the inclusive design toolkit which is worth checking out.

One question asks: What is one thing you can do to practice empathy today?

Watch.

"Crazy Rich Asians" finally arrived in Paris! The movie has been making waves as the first all Asian cast since "The Joy Luck Club" in 1993! It's a fun movie with a strong female lead and powerful message to Hollywood that success can come from diverse voices (including those who worked behind the scenes). The movie is also a great way to take a various trip to Singapore.

But you don't have to take my word for it, ask your Asian friends what they thought of it.

New writing ✍️

Since NaNoWrimo started, I've published 12,202 words. That's probably more than I wrote all of last year. Instead of trying to make sure every word is perfect, I'm focused on getting a new post out into the world every day. Here are a few new pieces since last week: From the archives:
