Notes of Interest

  • We will be updating our Dewart Lake Directory in the spring of 2019. If you are aware of any changes to your lane, please contact your lane director.

  • There is the possibility of food being part of our next annual meeting if there is enough interest.

In Remembrance

Long-time lake resident Warren Huntzinger passed away on August 10. 2018.

A Reminder

Idle speeds on the lake pertain to wave runners, as well as boats. They are to maintain a 200-foot distance from the shoreline so as not to disturb any buoys.

Walleye Stocking

The lake has been stocked with 2,632 walleye. They are 6-8 inches in length and should be “legal size” in just about two years.

Letter from the President

Fall has arrived! The leaves are beginning to color, the temperatures cooler, and some of our neighbors will be headed to warmer climates soon. Those of us who stay year round will enjoy the peace that Fall brings due to less traffic and lake activities.

We have had a remarkable year at our lake. We've gotten a good handle on the Eurasian Water Milfoil, we recently stocked the lake with 6-8” Walleye, thanks in part to private contributions and from the stocking fund of your DLPA. The Walleye should reach the legal size in just over two years.

The DLPA Directory will be updated and issued in the Spring of 2019, so if your Lane Director isn't able to reach you, and you wish to make changes to the information in the directory, contact them using the phone number listed in this newsletter. This is a free service, and there is no cost for the directory.

The Dewart Lake Association dues are still the lowest of many of the nearby lakes, and dues help pay for weed control and fish stocking. I urge you to complete the enclosed form and mail it along with your contribution to DLPA, P. O. Box 152, Syracuse, Indiana 46567, or go online to dewartlake.org to pay your dues.

Everyone have a safe Fall and Winter! We will see you next Spring!

Chip Wallstead, President

Dewart Lake Protective Association

Our Lake

by Chip Wallstead

Dewart Lake is a natural lake in northern Indiana's Kosciusko County that was created during the last ice age. The body of water spans 551 acres, with an average depth of feet and 16 feet and a maximum depth of 82 feet. Its normal elevation is 868 feet above sea level. Two inlets to the east feed Dewart Lake; it's outlet to the west at Hammond Ditch leads into Waubee Lake. The lake's dam at the outlet was upgraded by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources in 2005. However, the the lake is mostly maintained by the Dewart Lake Protective Association, which conducts water testing, fish stocking an fund raising for special projects.

Facilities at Dewart Lake include a public boat ramp to the northwest. Water skiing, fishing and boating are the primary recreational activities on the lake. Canoeing and kayaking to the lake's central island are a great way to spend an afternoon, appreciate the bird and animal life and watch a sunset.

Because Dewart Lake is home to seven species of turtle, a number of long- and short-term turtle studies have been completed here.

Dewart Lake anglers reel in catches of Northern Pike, Bluegill, Perch, Large Mouth Bass, spotted gar, and due to a recent stocking, Walleye within a couple of years. Fishing enthusiasts should note there is a “no wake” zone on the south shore just east of Crowl’s Bay. Black Crappie can reach up to 12 inches long, Northern pike, up to 30 inches, and Bluegill up to 8 inches.

There are many other recreational activities within a short distance from Dewart Lake, making it one of the county's bet lakes to visit or live permanently!
