In Gallery 1, Tom Buckland, Nicci Haynes and Dan Moor present new interactive works in A Magic Stranger than Death opening on Friday 7 December.

Artist Nicci Haynes says her recent interactive work could be thought of as a cross between a flick book and a conveyor belt. “Recall the phenakistoscope, the zoetrope and the praxinoscope, and you might get close to imagining the sort of moving-image device that I am constructing for this exhibition,” Haynes says.

Tom Buckland presents a series of drawing machines that autonomously create artworks of a random nature.  By replacing the artist’s hand with a mechanical arm, these machines prompt us to ask – do we even need artists anymore?

Dan Moor wonders if cable ties can help us make sense of it all. “Four billion years later: we have lots of big questions and a huge amount of answers that fail to address the bigness of the questions. Are they the right questions? Moor has set loose thirty thousand used cable tie ends into the world to see what they do and if they can help.

A Magic Stranger than Death invites us to engage with the artwork and pose our own questions.

In Gallery 2, we present work by the winner of Tuggeranong Arts Centre‘s inaugural prize of a solo exhibition on graduation from a Diploma of Visual Arts at the Canberra Institute of Technology.

Artist Margot Date repeats a single stitch to mirror patterns of nature and mapping of the mind in her mixed media exhibition, Unchained, opening at Tuggeranong Arts Centre on Friday 7 December. Date says her current work shows her development as an artist after a long and varied career in journalism and media.

"I have been working with fabric and wool for many years but in 2013 I began painting. I started the Diploma of Visual Arts at CIT full-time in 2017. The teachers were all practising artists and were so generous with their time and knowledge. I was delighted to be awarded the Tuggeranong Arts Centre prize and have worked on the exhibition since my graduation last December. The centrepiece is Unchained, in free-form chain stitch crochet. The work is like a diary, with extra stitches added every day of the year,” Date said.

Our Voices, Our Future is about celebrating the voices of young people and empowering students to recognise that their voices matter. Young people are our future and every young person has a unique and important role to play in contributing their voices to reconciliation.

Our Voices, Our Future is also about acknowledging and valuing the place of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples voices and perspectives within Australia’s national story and reconciliation journey.

This exhibition showcases young people’s visions for their futures and a reconciled Australia and continues until Thursday 20 December, 2018.

A cast of nearly 300 Fresh Funk dancers will conclude a year of celebrations with a high energy urban dance remake of The Hunger Games at Erindale Theatre in December.

The production of The Hunger Games is a fitting finale to an inspirational year and fans will not be disappointed with our nail-biting remake of the best-selling book and movie.

The cast had a great time choreographing the thrilling battle scenes, which lend themselves brilliantly to urban dance and our high-energy style and music; incorporating acrobatics and combat choreography.

The Hunger Games will be performed by the full Performance Program of Fresh Funk dancers at Erindale theatre on Saturday 8 December at 5pm and 8pm.

Join us in our lakeside bar - The Hunting Lodge - and help us celebrate the year that was and officially launch our 2019 Program.

The evening will commence with the opening of two new exhibitions: ‘A Magic Stranger Than Death’ featuring interactive installations by Tom Buckland, Nicci Haynes and Dan Moor; and ‘Unchained’ featuring new work by Margot Date, 2017 CIT graduate recipient of the TAC Exhibition Award. 

The Centre will also celebrate the achievements of 2018, including the presentation of two recent awards, before our 2019 Program is officially launched by Joy Burch, Speaker, ACT Legislative Assembly and Member for Brindabella.
