Pepperdine's campus will be closed through Thanksgiving in connection to the Woolsey Fire & all athletic events scheduled to be held in Malibu will be transitioned elsewhere. The contests include Volleyball's last three matches of the year as it will work with the WCC office to figure out an alternative plan, Men's Water Polo's Golden Coast Conference Championships will now be held at Long Beach State & a WBB tip versus UC Irvine on the 16th will be rescheduled. The Waves MBB squad wasn't scheduled to be back on campus until the 26th for a matchup with Idaho State, which, at this point will proceed as planned. (link)
Former Ohio State FB AC Smith is on the loose again, takes to Twitter to tell Texas HC & former fellow Buckeyes staffer Herman that he plans to air out a bunch of past behavior, including alleged extramarital affairs & Herman's drinking habits. Smith even posted a screen shot of a text message thread with Herman telling him he's going public, Herman responds, "Ok. Sounds good. Hook Em [hook em emoji]!" More. (link); No comment from the Texas department. (link)
OregonLive sources details of what Oregon MBB coaches told the university's general counsel in relation to the recruitment of former Louisville/South Carolina student-athlete Bowen. As you'll recall, Bowen's father said the Ducks offered an "astronomical sum" for his son's commitment, an allegation that was never backed up. UO AC Stubblefield: "We were never going to get him. The kid wasn't making the decisions." Stubblefield also said Bowen Sr. did mention cash on the official visit to Eugene by simply noting, "Usually on these visits they take care of us." Fellow AC McKenna indicates he never heard Bowen Sr. ask for money & Ducks HC Altman never met agent runner Dawkins, who did not accompany the Bowens on their visit. (link)
Maryland Prez Loh reportedly went against the advice of UMD's general counsel when he took responsibility for the passing of former Terps FB student-athlete McNair. The Baltimore Sun's Richman: "A different source close to the situation described it this way: Loh called attorney general Brian Frosh ahead of the press conference, walked him through his plan and was told, 'You are the client,' which the source said could be interpreted in a number of ways." Also of interest on how all the developments played out, "Some observers look at the timing of his decision and think Loh — who holds a doctorate in psychology from the University of Michigan and a law degree from Yale University — played his cards right to achieve his objectives and end up looking good in the public eye." (link)
Colgate AD Moore & Manhattan boss Reilly visit with AthleticDirectorU for a conversation on culture, moderated by Northwestern Assoc. AD for Facilities & Operations Attles. Moore: "It’s important to discover the culture bearers in your department and at the university, and to connect with them to amplify and help guide and shift. […] Sometimes subculture behavior is a relic of a decades old policy. That’s is why it is good to listen to people's reason why things are the way they are." Reilly: "Building trust is critical because without trust, you won’t have healthy relationships, and without healthy relationships, you’ll never build the culture as one impacts the other. […] Subcultures will always exist, whether they strengthen or weaken the overall culture will be something you manage as the director of athletics." More in the 12-minute video. (link)

ESPN College GameDay will camp in Orlando for this weekend's UCF-Cincinnati matchup. Knights fans will undoubtedly show out. (link, link); Colorado & Arizona State MBB will meet in China next year in what will officially be a non-conference tip. The match-up will be the latest piece of the Pac-12's China Game presented by Alibaba Group. (link); Speaking of Alibaba, Singles' Day racked up an astronomical $31.8B this year in China, up from 2017's $25.3B. And you thought Black Friday was a big deal. (link)

Louisville parted ways with FB HC Petrino & Cards AD Tyra was rather frank in some of his assessment of the program, "If you want to say that culture equals effort, then something screwy was going on. Because the effort wasn't what it has been historically... (The players) can't hide from that. It shows up on film." Petrino will be paid his full buyout of $14M+ over the course of the next couple of years. Tyra points to "contingency funds," as well as the department's reserves, to handle the big number. There's also stacks of cash from the new Adidas deal. (link, link, link); USA Today's Berkowitz: "With Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino's firing, coordinators Brian VanGorder, Lonnie Galloway, Mike Summers will due buyouts with combined total of nearly $1M. VanGorder (325K) not subject to duty to mitigate/offset; Galloway and Summers have duty to mitigate with offset." (link)
Notre Dame AD Swarbrick on the challenges of FB scheduling & the future of the Irish's Shamrock Series that includes a trip to Yankee Stadium this Saturday to face Syracuse, "There are sort of two dynamics here. One is people look at the schedule as a finished product in the year you’re playing it and say, 'Oh Gosh, I can’t believe you did X and Y.' They don’t come together that way. [...] I hate to even engage in these discussions, because you wind up sort of justifying it. I’m fine with people criticizing it. But they play out over that time. [...] There’s a layer of complexity and factors that it’s never in your self-interest to explain publicly. You just have to say, 'Bring it on. It’s all right.'" Swarbrick also points to ND's independence on why it can get creative with neutral site opportunities that wouldn't otherwise be as realistic to pull off. (link)
Pac-12 Networks Prez Shuken adds context to the recently announced league sponsorship deals with Comcast & Cox. Shuken: "We are pleased with how the market has been responding to our Pac-12 sponsor and advertiser opportunities, and the value that leading brands are seeing in the Pac-12. […] With an evolved content strategy and multi-platform approach for Pac-12 Networks this season we have been able to further extend our ability to develop compelling branded content throughout our programming.  A great example of this is that as we have taken our show on the road to all 12 campuses with 'The Pregame,' there was great interest from partners in being involved and branded content has found its way into this programming that spreads throughout our linear, digital and social media channels. [...] I am continuously amazed by the 'stickiness' of college sports content, and the levels of passion and engagement that our fans have for Pac-12 sports.  From a trend perspective, we are absolutely continuing to see the evolution of consumption towards non-linear platforms and we are adapting to ensure we continue to meet consumer needs." (link)
Week 11 Misery Index from USA Today's Wolken: Purdue (both bc of its loss at Minnesota & the potential exit of HC Brown back to his hometown & alma mater at Louisville), Virginia Tech, USC, Miami (FL) & South Carolina. Trending that way: Wisconsin, Kentucky, NC State, Houston & Oklahoma State. (link); Ohio State-Michigan State on Fox was the top-rated game of last weekend with a 3.8 overnight (second best for Fox this season behind Oklahoma-Texas at a 4.3). Mississippi State-Alabama on CBS did a 3.4, Oklahoma State-OU with a 3.0 on ABC, Clemson-Boston College on ABC recorded a 2.6, Auburn-Georgia on ESPN with a 2.3, Notre Dame-Florida State on NBC with a 2.2, Texas A&M-Ole Miss comes in with a 1.4 on CBS & Florida-South Carolina with a 1.3 on ESPN. (link)
Long profile by Sports Illustrated's Ballard on former NBA Commish Stern as he spent part of a day shadowing Stern, who is by no means retired & lounging on the beach. There's a lot here, but most notably for us, "I say, 'In the future, an assistant is in the locker room watching all the monitors and communicating with an assistant on the bench, and he says of [this player], his hydration is lousy, his blood pressure is low, his heart rate is high, his lactic acid is congealed and his facial recognition says he wants to be anywhere but in the game, get him out!' And that's all doable now, with wearables." More. (link)

Mississippi State AD Cohen after MSU's FB tilt at Alabama this weekend, "I've personally communicated with the coordinator of football officials, Steve Shaw, and SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey. Both of them assured me that Saturday's game with Alabama is being fully reviewed, and they also stated that the official issues will be identified swiftly and dealt with directly." Cohen's beef includes a missed fumble by the Crimson Tide during the opening possession and a Bulldogs' TD that was called off over a block in the back penalty, which, combined for a 14-point swing. National media voices, including ESPN's Fowler, took up for the Bulldogs. (link)
Iowa fell short of budget expectations for FY18 by $839,111, despite an increase in revenue from $115.1M to $116.2M from the previous year. FB was projected to bring in $23.5M, but tallied only $21.7M and overspent on its portion of the budget by $865K. The Hawkeyes did better than expected in Big Ten Conference distributions, however, pocketing $52.6M compared to the $50.4M they were expecting. Giving came in $1M under budget and $2.7M less than FY17. Elsewhere in the Hawkeye state, Northern Iowa brought in a better-than-expected $14.4M and Iowa State came in $7.8M above budget with $83.6M in revenue last year, spurred by a $300K+ excess from FB, which generated $10.7M overall. (link)
Facilities: Now that the votes are in and plans can move forward for the Aztecs, San Diego State has a model situation and stadium to mimick in Colorado State. (link); Washington State will put a $10M baseball club house at Bailey-Brayton Field in front of the Board of Regents this week. Located on the third-base side, it could include new locker rooms, meeting space and training area. Donated cash on hand ($4M), pledges ($2.5M) and sale of bonds ($3.5M) will fund the facility, though the bond money will be collected over a five-year period and there is a "project checkpoint" of August 1, 2019 at which point if collected cash does not total $6.5M the construction will not proceed. (link); Alabama's Board of Trustees gave the green light for a $14.6M renovation of the Mal A. Moore Athletic Facility to expand the sports med area and FB locker room. Birmingham-based Davis Architects will be paid a fee of 6.9% of the $11.3M budget and $50K for additional services. The project includes renovated 47K existing square footage and adding another 6,300. Too good not to include is Trustee Wilson's comment: "Any more discussion? Nobody wants to tell Saban no? Chickens." I think he was joking. (link)
North Carolina basketball is the latest to sign on with Influencer. Heels Dir. of Social and Digital Media Reynolds: "As one of the most followed college basketball teams in the country, our student-athletes have an equally large following and being able to provide them with on-demand content to brand themselves as tremendous students, elite athletes, and thoughtful citizens is one of our primary goals. Bringing INFLCR into the social media strategy for Carolina Men’s Basketball made sense. Our student-athletes are ambassadors for their team and university, and INFLCR has helped us help them showcase themselves to the masses." INFLCR boss Cavale credits Reynolds and former UNC standout May, who currently serves as DOBO for the program, for getting the deal done. (link)
Also Noticed: Last week Minnesota filed a motion in U.S. District Court asking a judge to dismiss the lawsuit brought against the school in June by nine FB players, who alleged gender and racial discrimination. The memo, part: "The five student-athletes found responsible for the sexual misconduct were sanctioned for one reason and one reason only: their conduct on the morning of Sept. 2, 2016. It had nothing to do with their gender. It had nothing to do with their race." The lawsuit also accuses outgoing Prez Kaler of making defamatory statements against the players. (link); Who knows what he really said, but Auburn FB HC Malzahn was caught on camera saying what looks like, to some, "They better not fire me" or maybe "they better not fine me" while walking along the sidelines in the Tigers game against Georgia on Saturday. Either way, Malzahn's comment stoked the social media flames. (link); Interesting subtweet sent by Southeastern Louisiana AD Artigues to D1Baseball's Rogers, "Pleased to announce the Southland Conference AD’s overwhelming support of the NCAA approving a 3rd  assistant for baseball in a poll taken on today’s conference call!" (link); SAP will buy survey software maker Qualtrics for a cool $8B in cash. Qualtrics had been expected to go public this week. SAP CEO McDermott compares the move to Facebook buying Instagram. (link); Pabst Brewing Company and MillerCoors are headed to trial at the end of the month with the former contending that the latter wants to put it out of business by ending a longstanding partnership through which MillerCoors brews Pabst's beers. Pabst needs 4-4.5M barrels brewed annually and claims MillerCoors is the only option, seeking $400M in damages and for MillerCoors to be ordered to honor its contract. (link)
