Meet Our Partner: Project Redwood

EOS International has been chosen for a second year to receive a grant from Project Redwood. EOS was awarded a grant of $25,000 from Project Redwood to support a three-year initiative providing rural women small business opportunities though our Rural Women Entrepreneurs Program. This program will provide, train and support 120 women as they invest in EOS’s fuel efficient oven and start their own bakery businesses.

Families Lifting Themselves
Out of Poverty

Reyna Garcia was one of the 101 recipients of EOS International’s improved oven in 2017. In her small village of Waswali, Matagalpa, employment opportunities are limited, especially for rural women. With a small personal investment, EOS provided her with an improved oven outside of her home. These unique ovens use eighty percent less firewood than traditional Nicaraguan ovens (saving money for firewood and reducing deforestation) as well as being safer and more reliable.

With her new installation, Doña Reyna started a business in her own backyard baking breads and pastries to sell at the local market. As her bakery has grown she has been able to offer employment opportunities to her family and neighbors. In addition to the technology installation, EOS provided Reyna with baking, business, accounting, and marketing courses to help women entrepreneurs like her succeed.

Update from Nicaragua

As many of you have heard, the strained political situation in Nicaragua continues. This has caused instability for every single person in Nicaragua. Although this slowed EOS down temporarily, we have been able to regain our leadership position. We have relocated our office to the department capital city of Estelí, allowing us easier access to institutions and partners. There is a need now, more than ever for safe drinking water and opportunities to generate income. Just this past month, our team has installed 20 solar panels in rural communities in Boaco bringing electricity to family’s homes for the first time, completed a 20 oven project in collaboration with the Mayor’s Office of Cuidad Antigua, and launched a new initiative to provide water and sanitation solutions to rural communities partnering with WaterAid and the Nicaraguan WASH network. We remain committed to the people and country of Nicaragua. Our staff’s safety has been our first priority, and their dedication has driven our programs to continue and grow, now resuming to the level before the political disturbance started in April. We appreciate all of the thoughts and support that we have received during this trying time and remain optimistic for a positive outcome for all Nicaraguans.
