St. David Lutheran Church

NOVEMBER 14, 2018

Photo:Pastor Glenn Boland asked about two dozen kids for Children's Sermon what they like to eat and if they've ever been hungry.  He then explained there are people in our community, our state, elsewhere in the United States, and  throughout the world who often go without food to eat so are hungry.  Pastor appealed to all (especially parents) to help feed the hungry with donations this Sunday to Lutheran World Relief.

Photo: World Hunger Advent Calendar cover says, "The world is about to turn..."  It shows a star shining down on Mary and a baby wrapped in swaddling cloth lying in a manger.
ELCA World Hunger Advent Calendars

Celebrate the excitement, anticipation and wonder of the birth of Christ with this ELCA Good Gifts Advent Calendar. Each day is a reminder of the reason for the season with hymns, prayers, Bible verses and stories of how ELCA Good Gifts make a difference in the world.

These calendars should be available at St. David by the end of November.

Advent is December 2 - 24
Photos are captioned - What appears as gaps are captioned explanations for the benefit of those with low vision or visually impaired.
These photos depict the major events of Homecoming of this past Sunday. Header (upper left corner) - St. David Lutheran Church Home Coming, November 11th, 2018.
Photo 1 (upper right corner) - Rev. Adam Carnell is in the pulpit reading the Gospel.  Adam, a son of St. David, graduated from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in 2017, and was called to be associate pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church, in Aiken, South Carolina.  Hear his sermon at http://stdavid.net/sermons/index.html

Photo Left - Choir; Photo Right - Dr. Al Roberts plays the organ with the Brass Ensemble
Great music from our Hand Bell choir for our prelude, our Adult Choir singing an old-time hymn montage, and supported by our Brass Ensemble and percussionists made for an uplifting worship experience.
Homecoming means family represented in these four photos by three generations - grandmothers, a mother and uncle, and their baby girls.  There were even families with four generations present at Homecoming!
Photo Left - Church members go through two long rows of tables filled with all sorts of food.  Photo Right - A view of the food line from atop the gym bleachers.  Almost every round table was filled.  A presentation of church member veterans is being shown in the background.
Of course Homecoming means lots of food!!!
Photo (left) - Veterans who served after World War II through 1975 in attendance were (from left to right):
Archie Moore, Walt Matuszak, Jim Riddle, Harold "Chick" Roof, Roger Coffman, Wade Fulmer, Ronnie Brunson, Earl Jeffcoat, John Bundrick, Jim Brazell, Larry Lown, Stan Minemier and Charlie Compton.

Photo (right) - Veterans who served from 1976 to current day in attendance were (from left to right):

Many living St. David veterans were not available for the photos but we hope they will participate the next opportunity.
Photo collage: St. David Lutheran Church Founder's Day Celebration 1845-2018.  Left side from top to bottom shows a proximation of what a tree arbor would look like which is where St. David first started meeting, the small white church  built in 1845 then was renovated and enlarged in the 1930's.  Bottom right shows a front three-quarter view of our current church facilities.  Top right is a photo of the Founding Member Memorial plaque listing all 13 founding member names; nine of the members are buried in our cemetery.  The middle right photo shows the new memorial plaques at the graves of founding members David and Nancy Roof.

Bernie Lee, Council President, read a brief history of St. David from its joining the South Carolina Synod on November 10th, 1845, through the growth in facilities and ministries for these past 173 years to current day.  Bernie explained that nine of the thirteen founding members are buried at St. David but many headstones are very hard to read and do not recognize them as founding members.

Pastor Boland dedicated memorial plaques for our founding members.  One memorial plaque (top right photo), located at the base of our bell tower, identifies all founding members and where they are located in our cemetery.

The Tree of Life is used on these plaques due to its many
references in the Bible, and is symbolic of how our church grew its outreach into our community.

Header: Blind lady of justice holding a sword in her right hand, and balance scales in her left hand; entitled, "MORE JUSTICE."
Graphic of a row of houses; titled, "Affordable Housing."
Photo collage: Left - Young couple wearing military fatigues sitting on the street, his arm around her, both holding sign that says, "Homeless, broke and out of luck."  Center - Middle aged man with beard wearing a stocking cap, coat and jeans holding a sign that says, "Seeking human kindness."  Right - Person sleeping on the sidewalk wrapped up in a sleeping bag.

In the photo below, Pastor Boland signed a document making St. David a covenanted member of MORE Justice, a large and growing number of churches in the Midlands of South Carolina interested in facing issues of social injustice, and doing something to make life better.  At meetings last month the group considered various topics.  It came down to two issues for 2019.

The first is to take measures to control gun violence, which is rampant in Richland County and spilling over into Lexington and other neighboring counties.  Sheriff Leon Lott was very passionate about enlisting the aid of the community in combating the growing number of gun related crime, and the apparent complete disregard for human life especially by so many teenagers and young adults.

The second issue, which was narrowly adopted for 2019, was to address homelessness by providing affordable housing.  A woman told her
poignant story of how she and her husband were homeless.  Her husband had lost his job and they couldn’t find anyplace that they could afford.  She was pregnant, gained a place to stay briefly but was released in her third trimester back into homelessness.  She went into the hospital to have her baby.  However,  her baby was placed into foster care because they were homeless.

St. David participated last month in a Habitat for Humanity project to renovate several homes, and we anticipate to grow our support as there will be several more opportunities in this coming year.

Work will also continue on the 2018 focus to address equal opportunity for education, and improved care of mental illness.

Photo of header titled, "Verse of the day."
1 Peter 3:18

Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...

Having stood over the open graves of friends, family, and strangers, I know the appearance and feel of death's finality and our human frailty. But Christ's death is that great reminder that death is a matter of perspective and faith. I believe God raised Jesus from the dead and that Jesus is the first fruits of those of us who believe in him. He is alive, not just in Spirit, but in bodily form. Because Jesus lives, so will we!

My Prayer...

Almighty God, thank you for the gifts of your grace, Spirit, forgiveness and life. Most of all, thanks for the gift of your Son, who brought life and immortality to life in me through your salvation. While I have no great desire to die, I know I can look through death to you and your victory in me through Jesus. Please give me the courage to live for you every day until that day you take me home. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
