Because today we're celebrating desert-painting legend, Georgia O'Keeffe's birthday!

If you've ever wondered why we call ourselves GhostRanch, you might be interested to know that Ghost Ranch, New Mexico was O'Keeffe's home and source of inspiration for many years. With an innovative and atypical approach to everything she did (ahem, check the Model A Ford link below), she's a true idol to us. 

We have a set of values here at the Ranch, and many were exemplified by O'Keeffe in her tenacity for learning and fearlessness to be herself. She was so much more than a woman that painted suggestive flowers. 

May we all strive toward her brand of authenticity, vibrancy, and gumption for our lives.

• The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum has an ongoing "Oral History" project to document stories of people that knew or met O'Keeffe. It's one thing to look at and learn from her art, but listening to these stories brings in a whole new element.
• More artists reflect on her influence on their work and lives in this Tate article. 

• O'Keeffe and photographer Alfred Stieglitz wrote dozens and dozens of love letters to each other throughout their relationship—often 30-40 pages long. Up your damn Post-It note game. 

• Dream bigger? O'Keeffe would often drag a mattress onto the roof to gaze at the stars. She also converted her Model A Ford into a studio by turning the driver's seat around and resting a canvas in the back passenger seat.  

• "Witch Ranch" or "Ghost Ranch" in New Mexico was the site of many legendary paranormal stories. Karen Butts, landscape tour manager at Ghost Ranch, talks through its fascinating history. It's no surprise this place called to O'Keeffe.
