South Veteran's Day Celebration

The Texas 041st, Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps held a  wonderful  Veteran's Day tribute on Friday,  November 9th. Thank you to our Veteran's that participated in South's Veteran's Day celebration.

South Academic Decathlon Shines at Invitational Meet

On Saturday, November 3, 2018, the Harlingen South Academic Decathlon team traveled to Sinton, Texas to compete in their annual invitational meet.

In the Large School Honors Division, senior Isaac Moreno placed 2nd in Music and Science and 3rd in Language and Literature and Math.  Also in the Large School Honors Division, senior Dalilah Sanchez placed 2nd in Social Science and 3rd in Art.

Way to go!  We look forward to continued success at the next meet!

South Students Join HCISD's Project Wave Team

HCISD's Project WAVE Team rode the UTRGV Ridley, a floating classroom, on Tuesday, November 5. The students were able to participate in and observe marine sampling methods while collaborating with experts in the field. The students will apply their knowledge to design and build their automated vessel as part of HCISD's ongoing robotics collaborative. South students representatives include Alyssa De La Cruz, Jose Gutierrez, Cara Ingram, and Ben Ruiz.

Engineering Club accepted into Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers Jr. Chapter

The Harlingen South Engineering Club was recently accepted as an official Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers Jr. Chapter. In the official acceptance letter from CEO, Raquel Tamez, she recognized the group’s efforts in fulfilling the organization’s mission which is to “change lives by empowering the local community to realize its fullest potential and to impact the world through STEM awareness, access, support and development and realizing that we have the potential to be the leading innovators, scientists, mathematicians and engineers.” The organization continues to work on its projects for FORD NGL, as well as gear up for its future Team America Rocketry challenge coming up in the spring.

South Academic Decathlon Soars in Writing Competition

On Sunday, November 11, six Harlingen South Academic Decathlon students were honored for their achievements in the Creative Writing and Informative Writing contests for the 25th Annual Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival.  

Students had to write about a subject that raised awareness of birds and habitats native to the Valley.  In total, there were 388 entries for Creative Writing and 290 entries for Informative Writing.

In the 11th grade Informative Writing category, Melissa Muro's "Mourning Dove" received Honorable Mention, and Isaiah Zavala's "Buff-Bellied Hummingbird" received 2nd place.

In the 12th grade Creative Writing category, Kristian Posada's "Red-Crowned Parrot" received 2nd place.

South swept the 12th grade Informative Writing category: Rebecca Ochoa's "Long-Billed Thrasher" received 3rd place; Joseph Aragus's "Great Horned Owl" received 2nd place, and Fabian Almendariz's "Ringed Kingfisher" received 1st place.

Also, Fabian Almendariz's work was judged as superior among nearly 300 other entries; he received Best in Show for Informative Writing. Congratulations!

Chase Signs Letter of Intent to play for U of H

Chase Harrell signed a letter of intent to study and compete at the University of Houston in the area of Track and Field. Chase will be a thrower for the Cougars as they compete in Conference USA. We are proud of all of your accomplishments, Chase!  Hawk Pride, A Step Above!
