On Sunday, November 11, six Harlingen South Academic Decathlon students were honored for their achievements in the Creative Writing and Informative Writing contests for the 25th Annual Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival.
Students had to write about a subject that raised awareness of birds and habitats native to the Valley. In total, there were 388 entries for Creative Writing and 290 entries for Informative Writing.
In the 11th grade Informative Writing category, Melissa Muro's "Mourning Dove" received Honorable Mention, and Isaiah Zavala's "Buff-Bellied Hummingbird" received 2nd place.
In the 12th grade Creative Writing category, Kristian Posada's "Red-Crowned Parrot" received 2nd place.
South swept the 12th grade Informative Writing category: Rebecca Ochoa's "Long-Billed Thrasher" received 3rd place; Joseph Aragus's "Great Horned Owl" received 2nd place, and Fabian Almendariz's "Ringed Kingfisher" received 1st place.
Also, Fabian Almendariz's work was judged as superior among nearly 300 other entries; he received Best in Show for Informative Writing. Congratulations!
