TO BE INDUCTED DEC. 1ST INTO MONTANA OUTDOOR HALL OF FAME
For lasting contributions to restoration and conservation.
Michel Pablo (1844-1914) and Charles A. Allard (1852-1896)
Perhaps no animal is as synonymous with the American West as bison, and two Montanans played an essential role in the preservation of this iconic species.
Michel Pablo and Charles Allard lived during the 19th century decimation of North America’s bison herds. Once numbering more than 30 million, the mass slaughter sent populations plummeting by the 1870s.
While their intent was entrepreneurial, the cultural significance of bison likely inspired them as well, researchers believe. For example, Allard and Pablo presented the gift of buffalo meat to the reservations’ chiefs one Christmas. Reports suggest such a feast hadn’t been experienced by tribes there in more than a generation.

Statue of Bison Calf Stolen From Nature Area Near Topeka
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Authorities say a statue of a bison calf has been stolen from a popular nature area north of Topeka.
The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that Doug Iliff reported that the statue was broken off at the base and taken week from the parking lot at Iliff Commons, a privately owned area that is open to the public. It has several miles of trails for walking, running, cross-country skiing and mountain biking.
Iliff estimates the statue is worth about $800.
The Shawnee County Sheriff's Office is investigating the theft. But as of Wednesday, there were no reports of arrests.

Baby bison returns to perch along nature trail WIBW
(WIBW) - A baby bison statue is back on its perch at a local nature trail. Vandals broke off and stole the sculpture from Iliff Commons some time Nov.
The first stop was a tour at Broken Wagon Bison in Hobart, Indiana. While at the ranch, the members rode on a trailer through the field of bison. They were able to feed the bison alfalfa treats as the owners discussed the cost, health and feed requirements, rangeland management and growth of the bison. The owners of the ranch explained the differences between raising cattle and bison, with one of the main advantages being the leanness of bison meat in comparison to beef. Ranch owners then talked with students about the history of bison on the prairies, as well as the opportunities of raising bison.

Canadian Bison Association Honors Parsons
The Canadian Bison Association on Sunday honored NBA Board Member Gerald Parsons of Oklahoma with the prestigious Myrt Lenton Award in recognition of Parsons' long history of cross-border commitment to the bison business. The ceremony occurred during the CBA annual convention in Regina, SK.
The Myrt Lenton Memorial Award was established to recognize members of the Canadian Bison Association who have unselfishly given their time and provided their tireless effort to maintain and give purpose to membership. The award consists of a bronze sculpture of a bison cow with a newborn calf. Each recipient presented with the award is allowed to keep the sculpture for one year. An engraved plaque is given to the recipient to keep.
Myrt Lenton was passionate about the bison industry. Myrt and Bill Lenton obtained their first bison in the mid-1960s. They were instrumental in pioneering the modern Canadian bison business and the Canadian Bison Association. Myrt died in a car accident on November 20, 1994.
Parsons has served as the NBA's International Director on the CBA board for many years. He has also contributed his time to the CBA's annual show and sale and to the CBA bison registry.
He is only the third American to receive the Myrt Lenton Award since its inception in 1995. Del and Cam Hensel were jointly honored with the award in 1999.
