News and Updates from MESA

From the Principal's Desk

Parents guess what…..  We are excited to invite you to our Trimester 1 Academic Awards Program.  The awards program is on November 20th and the schedule is as follows: K4-4th grade from 8:45am- 10:15am. and 5th-8th grade is from 1:30-3:00pm.  To see a list of awards please scroll down to the academic section and read “Trimester 1 Awards Program” for details. Parents, please come out and support your children at the awards.  The smiles and joy on their faces when they receive recognition for their academic accomplishments is priceless. Please contact your scholars teacher if you have questions about the program.  On December 20, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. we will celebrate and would like you here for our winter program. Our theme this year is “Motown Winter Experience.” All parents are invited to share in on the fun and enjoy an afternoon of singing and celebrating.  The program will begin at 1:30p.m. Please contact our main office if you have any questions. Scholars and teachers will collaborate and coordinate a modified dress attire (it will be particular by class and align with the classes performance). Teachers will share the requested dress attire with families.  Scholars who do not participate are required to wear the traditional school uniform.

  • Have you connected with Dean Cobb and received your login information for Infinite Campus?  This allows you to see your scholars grades immediately after they are posted by teachers.

  • Winter STAR test is just around the corner.  Make sure scholars are reading everyday for a minimum of 30 minutes.  Also, make sure to encourage them to complete academic interventions from home including ALEKS in Middle School, I-Ready, and,  Arrive Booster!

We will be on Thanksgiving break from November 21, 2018 through November 26, 2018.  The school offices will be closed. We wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving!

We are partnering with an organization called FAST (Families and School Together).  This partnership will strengthen supports and resources provided to our scholars and parents.  More information will be shared in the coming weeks. I ask that parents take time to complete the survey from FAST.  It is confidential and the information will help with understanding the dynamics of our families. The survey takes about 20-25 minutes but provides a depth of helpful information that will allow for effective program implementation.  Please click the link below to complete the survey. Thank you.

Habit Of Scholarship - HOS Focus

During the month of November our HOS focus is “duel”. Scholars are learning about accountability and social justice. Accountability is an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one's actions. While social justice is a concept of fair and just relations between the individual and society. This is measured by the explicit and tacit terms for the distribution of wealth, opportunities for personal activity, and social privilege.

For the next several weeks scholars will focus on being accountable and living out the meaning of social justice in tandem. The video below is a simplistic way to explain social justice to our scholars. I ask that you watch the video below below with your scholar and have a conversation with them on what they learned from the video. Ask them this question, are we accountable for others and why? Ask your scholar about ways to demonstrate social justice.

ClassDojo

Scholars who reached the dojo incentive point total for October will have a small celebration on Thursday during lunch. All scholar names are below. Look for photos in the next newsletter. The November incentive point total is 180 points. Keep track of your scholars points and stay in constant communication with your scholar’s teacher. That line of communication is crucial in developing parent teacher cohesiveness.

Spirit Day

Spirit day is Thursday, November 15th. This spirit day is themed college apparel or professional attire. This is not a DRESS DOWN DAY, if scholars are not dressing professionally or in college apparel they must be in their traditional uniform. Professional dress is defined as dress for success meaning dress shirts and ties for boys and nice blouses, dresses, or dress pants for girls.  Don't forget the dress shoes.

Scholar Tips for parents

The attendance policy must be reiterated in this newsletter. Good attendance assist tremendously in the education of young minds so it is incredibly important that your scholar arrives to school on time. School starts at 8:30 and breakfast ends at 8:45. Please refer to the handbook if you have any questions or contact me directly,
(414) 514-1660.

The Vision

Scholars are becoming proficient at reciting the vision. I want to see if parents are learning it too. The first parent/scholar team, meaning you and your child or children, that can recite the vision in unison in front of me, will receive a $20 gift card the the restaurant of your choice.

MESA scholars are propelled to soar academically while demonstrating Habits of Scholarship that build strong character as they navigate towards college and career readiness with the support of professional lifelong learners.

Help MESA Fundraise

MESA has a fundraising goal of $40,000.00 this year. Our first pizza sale fundraiser was a success! There will be a winter and a spring concert along with other opportunities to support our school.  If you want to make a donation to the school or vol with a fundraiser see Dean Cobb for more details.

  •  Make sure your child has a quiet, well-lit place to do homework.

  • Avoid having your child do homework with the television on or in places with other distractions, such as people coming and going.

  • Make sure the materials your child needs, such as paper, pencils and a dictionary, are available. Ask your child if special materials will be needed for some projects and get them in advance.

  • Help your child with time management.

  • Establish a set time each day for doing homework. Don‘t let your child leave homework until just before bedtime. Think about using a weekend morning or afternoon for working on big projects, especially if the project involves getting together with classmates.

  • Tell your child how important school is. The attitude you express about homework will be the attitude your child acquires.

  • When your child does homework, you do homework.

  • Show your child that the skills they are learning are related to things you do as an adult. If your child is reading, you read too. If your child is doing math, balance your checkbook.
