GRANTS SET TO FLOW TO COMMUNITY GROUPS IN DROUGHT-AFFECTED REGIONS
The Coalition Government is investing $15 million in the Regional Drought Communities Small Grants Programme and I urge all eligible community organisations to apply.

Small grants will be available to not-for-profit community groups to deliver projects in drought affected regions focusing on reducing social isolation, leadership development and skills training and other group-based activities.

GOONDIWINDI RECEIVES $1.62 MILLION INJECTION FOR REGIONAL STUDY HUB

Tertiary education for students in the Goondiwindi region will be made easier, thanks to a $1.62 million injection by the Coalition Federal Government for a new regional study hub in town.

The Goondiwindi SILO Gateway to Training community organisation will establish a local study hub that provides tertiary students across the region with the following support:

  • Access to specialised study spaces with  high-speed digital connectivity
  • Links to tertiary institutions
  • Academic support
  • Access to learning aids including video conferencing
  • Administrative support
  • Pastoral care
  • Local volunteer mentoring program, linking new undergraduates to more experienced learners

More funding for Regional Study Hubs was part of the Coalition Government’s additional $134.8 million commitment to regional and rural higher education, bringing the total additional new funding for regional higher education to $400 million over five years.

We’re committed to bridging the divide between city and country by streamlining education opportunities and improving the ease of access.

SALUTING THEIR SERVICE COMMEMORATIVE GRANTS

I congratulate Junabee Memorial Hall on receiving $4000 in Federal Government funding for their commitment to commemorating Australia’s wartime history.

Junabee Memorial Hall will install a sandstone monument and flagpole in front of the existing memorial hall to honour veterans and recognise their service.

The grant was received through the latest Community Commemorative Grants category of the Saluting Their Service Programme to ensure we never forget those who served and sacrificed for our great nation.

An honour to launch the book celebrating Angelo Puglisi, the father of the Queensland Wine Industry.

In October, I got a good look at the three Cox Plates won by champion racehorse Winx with PM Scott Morrison (ScoMo). Great to meet the trainers and to have Maranoa’s Basil Nolan there too.
Condolence Message – Basil Nolan Jnr

I was shocked by the devastating and tragic news of Basil Nolan Jnr’s sudden passing on November 7, 2018.

The Nolan name is synonymous with the Australian Thoroughbred industry and the Southern Downs community. Basil Jnr’s passion for his family and our community is well-known, as was his advocacy for the future of the racing industry.

Basil Jnr’s wife Natalie, their young children and his parents, Basil Snr and Diane, and his brothers and sisters are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Please accept my condolences and please know that Basil Jnr and his legacy and commitment to our nation’s Thoroughbred racing industry will not be forgotten.
Morven’s had some tough times lately so it was fantastic to turn the first sod on the Federal Government's $4.18 million investment in the new Morven Rail Hub this month!
It was just as exciting to open the new Mulga Lands Gallery down the road in Charleville with $350,000 from the Community Drought Programme. Tackling the drought head on!
At Yumba, near Mitchell, Indigenous Affairs Minister Nigel Scullion and I were proud to acknowledge and celebrate Aunty Lynette Nixon who was awarded the NAIDOC Female Elder of the Year 2018.

The kids from St Patrick’s made it even more special with their Gungarri prayer!

Until next time
All the very best,
David
