The Eating Season Begins

Thanksgiving is next week and after that it is a tumble of holidays into the New Year. Despite diverse religious backgrounds, politics, and history, I'm sure we're all looking forward to the eating that will happen in the next six weeks.

To that end, I've made two book lists about food: cookbooks for young chefs and picture books celebrating eating

We have a couple of seasonal programs in the next few weeks. On Monday, November 19 we're making Candy Sushi. On Wednesday, November 21, we're going to make creatures from dried corn husks.

As we get ready for Thanksgiving, I'm thinking a lot about the complex history of American Indians and colonialism. An important part of my role as a librarian is to evaluate the books in our collection. I read all our Thanksgiving books carefully for the messages they convey about the history of our shared land.

Please let me know if you have any thoughts, suggestions, questions, requests, or anything else you would like to share.

Best,
Erin

Cookbooks for Young Chefs

There are a fair number of cookbooks written for a range of ages. This list includes titles for kids from preschool through high school.

Because some kids begin cooking for their families while they're still in high school, and some kids fall in love with cooking—I've included two classic adult cookbooks for young chefs who want to go further.
