NPCL Member Forum
14th November 2018 - TONIGHT

The NPCL Member’s Forum is tonight 14th November, after the Twilight Racing (around 8.30pm).  This will provide the opportunity for a significant number of members to participate without having to make a special trip to the Club.
The Board will provide an update on a variety of matters such as the Naval Point Development, etc.
We hope that as many members as possible take the opportunity to participate.

---------------------------

MOB Procedure
As the result of an incident recently, we would like to encourage crews on trailer yachts and keel boats to consider what they would do if a person falls of their boat.  All crews should consider how they would deal with a man overboard and how they would handle the situation.  Practice use of radio and your MOB drill...everyone on board needs to know (not just the skipper).
And remember to wear your life jacket on board!

Waka Racing at Kaiteriteri

Good luck to all the waka teams off to compete this weekend in the 10km/21km events, up in the beautiful Kaiteriteri.  We hope you have a fun and successful long weekend.

A Class World Championships
Two NPCL club members are going to the A Class World Championships in Australia which starts in two weeks time.
Daniel Philpott is already over there practicing and John Kennett is heading over this weekend.  New Zealand has 12 sailors attending, which is a record for NZ boats at this overseas event.  Team NZ have their afterguard of Peter, Glen and Blair sailing identical boats so they are likely to be the ones to beat.  They are now foiling both upwind and downwind with speeds up to 30 knots.  Entries are around 110 boats so it will be a big event in the beautiful Hervey Bay in Queensland.  The event should be fun for all competitors and there will certainly be some stiff competition.
Good luck Daniel and John!

It's believed to be the largest multi-class 2 day regatta in the world.

For many, it's the first major regatta they have sailed in and that's highlighted by the fact the Optimist green fleet is usually the largest of all the classes.

Close to 600 sailors and 500 boats are expected this year, which is a big jump from the first Sir Peter Blake Regatta, which started in 2002 with about 70 entrants.

This year's event will take place at the Torbay Sailing Club on December 1-2 and will feature some of the world's best sailors. Olympic and four-time world 49er champions and America's Cup winners Peter Burling and Blair Tuke will open proceedings and Volvo Ocean Race winners Daryl Wislang and Stu Bannatyne will be around too!

This year, there will be around $20,000 worth of prizes given away thanks to the regatta sponsors. You must be at the regatta to receive these.

Many sailors will be hoping to get their name on the Sir Peter Blake Memorial Trophy, which is awarded to the outstanding sailor of the weekend.

The Sir Peter Blake Regatta has its own app. The app is available for iPhone and Android devices. It is a great way to stay connected to the regatta with vital updates pushed out to everyone who allows. It’s recommended that if you’re planning on competing, that you download the app.

Club Cafe
Hours during sailing season:
Saturdays 9am-12noon approx
Wednesdays 4.30-6pm approx
Coffee and hot chocolate are on offer as well as pies and mini muffins.

---------------------------------------

Situations Vacant

We are still looking for volunteers to help in the cafe, kitchen and bar over the summer season.  We are also very keen to get a new caterer into the kitchen and are still on the lookout for a Bar Manager.  If you can help out or are interested in any of these positions, please let Marina in the office know.

------------------------------------
Dredging

Just a reminder that we still need to keep clear of the three vessels and the waste water dredging barge, which is carrying out these works, as it has limited visibility of small craft and limited ability to manoeuvre.
We must keep clear abeam and astern of the ship and 550m clear ahead.  The ship dredges at about 2 knots but can accelerate to 14 knots when it leaves the harbour.  We should keep well clear if we are on the harbour at night.

Please check the club noticeboard for information before racing.

LPC Works in the Harbour
LPC has started the Navigation Aid installation in late October, with a crane and barge working on the southern side of Shag reef.  We have posters up in the club house showing the plan or click here to see the PDF version.

CTYS Compound Clean-Up
 24 November 9am

It's time to clean up the CTYS compound again so any members who can help will be most welcome.  Bring your tree trimming equipment if you have any.  Clean up will be followed by a BBQ lunch before racing!

Canterbury Women’s Keeler Team Opportunity

Our mission is to create a pathway to enable women to participate in women’s sailing events nationwide and to encourage, initiate and support women in sailing.
As a first step in this initiative we are developing a team of seven Cantabrian women eager to challenge themselves to sail at the Wome
n’s National Keel Boat Championships in Auckland 5th – 7th April 2019.
Our team goal is to: look good, go fast, have fun, keep safe and make our clubs proud!
We have six confirmed team members and there is the opportunity for one more woman to become part of the team – is this you?

  • Have sail racing experience and are competent in at least two positions on a boat
  • Ideally have racing tactics experience
  • Available to train most Thursday evenings, most Sundays 9.30am – 3.30pm
  • Available weekends in March and 4th – 7th April 2019. We plan to go to Auckland to train for two weekends in March and then for the Nationals.
  • Able to fund your costs, if funding is not available – we are planning some fundraising initiatives including a Neptune's Kingdom (Nautical but nice) themed event
  • A member of a sailing club

If this is you and you are interested in finding out more, please email Karen Selway kselway@opinions.co.nz with a brief description of your sailing experience, reasons for being interested in joining the Team and what you feel you can bring to the team.  We look forward to hearing from you!

Canterbury Women’s Keeler Team Update
You may have heard a few rumours around the club about a group of women who are challenging themselves to compete at the Women’s National Keel Boat Championships. The rumour is true!
Our mission is to create a pathway to enable women to participate in women’s sailing events nationwide and to encourage, initiate and support women in sailing.
As a first step in this initiative we are developing a team of seven Cantabrian women eager to challenge themselves to sail at the Women’s National Keel Boat Championships in Auckland 5th – 7th April 2019.
Our team goal is: to look good, go fast, have fun, keep safe and make our clubs proud!
We are fortunate enough to have the support of a number of members at Naval Point for which we are extremely grateful. Of particular note, is the support of Phil and Danny Folter who are kindly coaching us on Full Circle and making a significant difference to our skills and chances of being competitive!  Also of mention is the Young 88 fleet, and the kind offers of Young 88 yachts for training by Dave Munro, Nicci Blain and Craig Edwards and Colin Lock.
We have established an on-going training schedule on Thursday evenings and Sundays covering key maneouvres and crew work, racing rules and safety.  If you see us out on the water, give us a wave, we are a friendly bunch!
Last Thursday evening, once the wind had dropped, we got out on the water for an hour practicing how to heave to, man overboard as well as tacking and gybing maneouvres.  On Sunday we almost made it to the Lyttelton Heads tacking multiple times and analysing what went well and what we could do better each time.  Our aim at present is to tack with a maximum drop in boat speed of 1.2 knots.  Coming back up the harbour, we gybed many times, again analysing each time what we did well and where we can improve. Danny’s coaching input was exceptional! We took time to enjoy Hector who was with us a large part of the way!
Our boat and crew work is improving expodentially each training session as we complete maneouvres and work out how we can use our skills and strength to look good, go fast, have fun, keep safe and make our clubs proud!
