On November 3rd, more than 30 committed folks joined ORS/The Exchange in a community forum to work on a vision for the solid waste system on Orcas, and for San Juan County. The event was kicked off by a panel of experts who work in the field locally and on the state level. Presentations covered the current system and improvements currently on the drawing board, as well as longer-term strategies. Then community members joined the experts and ORS board members in break-out groups. These groups came up with their own ideas on how to improve the reduce/reuse/recycle vision. Read more to learn about the findings of the forum, and how you can get involved.

Another Successful Household Hazardous Waste Event
On November 2nd, ORS and San Juan County hosted our second HHW Cleanup at the Orcas Transfer Station. 35 cars came through, dropping off hazardous material at no cost. Unfortunately, by lunchtime, our crew had to shut down the event--because the containment building reached capacity. Fortunately, Clean Harbors, the national hazardous waste company, sent a truck the following Monday and collected about two tons of material for safe disposal. ORS and the County intend to continue having collection events on a quarterly basis; the next happening in the spring. Click here for more info!
