The Future of Jura

High rise residential developments are coming to Parramatta Road Petersham, sooner or later, and they will impact on Jura’s future. We’re holding a meeting to discuss what ideal future premises for Jura might look like. What factors relating to building features and location are important to Jura members and our supporters?

Robin DiAngelo on White Fragility
Uncover and challenge racism! American writer Robin DiAngelo will give a free public talk at Sydney University on Tuesday 4th December. DiAngelo coined the term “white fragility” to cover typical patterns of behaviour that white people exhibit when they experience racial stress. Racism goes deeper than individual intentional acts of discrimination carried out by bad people. Racism doesn’t depend on individual actions. It is a default system of settler colonial society that reproduces itself. Progressive people, if we fail to attend to biases that are inherent to all humans, are complicit in perpetuating this “white supremacy”.

"White Fragility" is in stock at Jura, and you can find out more about Robin DiAngelo and her work here:

IWW Bad Bosses Registry

This survey is to help the Industrial Workers of the World identify restaurants and cafes that are exploiting staff around Sydney. The IWW differ from traditional trade unions in that they are entirely member led, and there are no paid officials. The leaders come from the workplaces, not a union office. The IWW will use this information to help you devise a campaign to get the workplace you deserve. This survey is the first step to remedying the problems in our workplaces. Now is the time to catch these dodgy bosses, organise our workplaces, and fight back for what's ours.

Peter Kropotkin and his revolutionary thought
Satuday Nov 24, 5pm to 6pm @ Jura Books
Sheila Maddock on 'Peter Kropotkin and his revolutionary thought'.
Peter Kropotkin (1842-1921), a fascinating person and dedicated revolutionary, has been a major figure in the Anarchist movement since his development of original anarchist ideas. In all his writings and in his life, Kropotkin always put theoretical ideas into practice an in developing ways to adapt anarchist ideals to the needs of the present day world. All this is still highly relevant in today's world of a crumbling capitalism and it's continued destruction of the planet we live on.
Come along and join the discussion!
Jura has been hosting more gigs lately, opening its doors as a venue for local independent and DIY artists. In Sydney's increasingly commercialised live music scene, Jura is a unique space where bands and fans can come together for the simple act of enjoying a night of music and comradery. Over the last few weeks we've had the pleasure of hosting Shady Nasty, City Rose, Ted Danson With Wolves, Flight to Dubai and more.

We've had a great short series of shows, with a fantastic atmosphere, and we'd like to thank the bands and everyone who has come along to the shows for proving that we don't need bosses, cops, or any other coercive forces to keep us in line in order to have a good time. Lets keep doing it ourselves!
If you're a local independent artist looking to raise funds for a worthy cause, or just want to be able to play your music without some capitalist bleeding you dry for your trouble, get in touch with us here or here, and keep an eye out for more gigs and events coming up!
Plus upcoming metal gig on December 15th, details TBA
