GDPR Six Months On: What Have Charities Learned?

Charity Digital News recently interviewed Philip Anthony, founder of non-profit IT specialist Coopsys, about his experiences helping clients navigate data security post-GDPR. Insights include:

  • The biggest mistake charities are making is not taking data security seriously enough, though this is more typically due to limited resources than idleness
  • In the best organisations, the adoption of GDPR best practice has been cultural rather than procedural
  • GDPR is not just an IT or fundraising issue - proper compliance isn't just about issuing data protection declarations

Involve Swindon Network Day - Help Us Shape the Agenda

Involve Swindon is a network of companies, statutory bodies and voluntary organisations working together to encourage employees to give their time and develop their skills through volunteering in the local community. Involve sources exciting volunteering projects for employees to get involved in ranging from team volunteering days through to using their business and professional skills to support a local charity or getting involved in the longer term as a regular volunteer or trustee. Involve works with local charities, social enterprises, community groups and statutory organisations who will really benefit from the skills employee volunteers can bring and their expertise in leading employee volunteering.

Information and Marketing Worker at Healthwatch Swindon

Healthwatch Swindon, part of The Care Forum, are recruiting for an Information and Marketing Worker based in Swindon who can: ensure that Healthwatch in Swindon has an effective social media and traditional media presence; keep the public up to date on local health and social care developments; market the project and its impact; and manage a database of contacts. The post is 22.5 hours per week, £18,070 – £20,661 pro rata (NJC:18-22). Closing date for applications is 19th November 2018 at 9am. Interviews will be held on 3rd December 2018 in Swindon.

Volunteer Support Officer at Healthwatch Swindon

Healthwatch Swindon, part of The Care Forum, are recruiting for a Volunteer Support Officer. Main tasks include: developing a team of volunteers to grow and lead the Healthwatch project; supporting the volunteers to contribute to programmes or pieces of health and social care related work; extending and diversifying the reach of volunteer recruitment; and working to motivate and retain recruited volunteers. The post is 18.5 hours per week, £22,401 – £25,463 pro rata (NJC 24-28). Closing date for applications is 10th December 2018 at 9am.

Independent Advocate – Statutory Advocacy at Swindon Advocacy Movement

Swindon Advocacy Movement are looking for an Independent Advocate for their Care Act Advocacy Service working with people with care and support needs. SAM has created a flexible and responsive accessible advocacy service enabling people to participate as fully as possible in any decision to maintain their independence and secure the rights and services they are entitled to. SAM are looking for a qualified Independent Advocate or someone who is interested in developing a career in advocacy and standing up for the rights of others. They offer a complete package of support, supervision and training including City & Guilds level 3 Independent Advocacy unit 301. This is a fixed term 18 month contract.

Project Coordinator at Dolphins’ Den

Dolphins’ Den is an initiative that supports people with a learning disability to set up their own business. They run a series of workshops followed by one-to-one mentoring by volunteer mentors from the local business community.

The Dolphins’ Den Project Coordinator position is a unique opportunity for someone with high attention to detail and coordination and administration experience to take on a new challenge! You will be helping to satisfy rigorous ESF and Big Lottery funding requirements by gathering participant documentation and completing monthly financial claims. You will also support the Project Lead to run fun and interactive monthly workshops for people with a learning disability around Swindon and Wiltshire, so good communication and people skills are essential.

Nationwide Community Grants

Have you got a project that tackles a housing problem in your local community but need some funding? Nationwide Community Grants can fund local housing projects that will strengthen your local community by supporting the most vulnerable, find new approaches to increasing the supply of housing, or will reinvent renting for both tenants and landlords. There are grants of up to £50,000 available.

LGBT Health and Social Care Fund

The Government Equalities Office are seeking to fund up to £1,000,000 of projects aimed at tackling LGBT health inequality. The Fund is in response to evidence that lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans individuals not only have poorer health when compared to the wider population, but also report poorer interaction with health services.

Courses at Green Labyrinth

Green Labyrinth are now offering both English functional skills (suitable for speakers of other languages) on Wednesdays (9:30am-11:15am) and GCSE English weekly classes on Mondays (12:30pm-2:30pm) at their central Swindon training centre on Milton Road. Government funding is available subject to qualifying criteria.
