Former Tennessee/Kansas State AD Currie continues to add consulting projects, this time at Texas in connection with UT's capital campaign, after engagements at Georgia Southern & South Carolina. Longtime Michigan State Deputy AD Ianni will hang it up at the end of January 2019, though he'll still be around as an advisor to Spartans AD Beekman through June of next year. Ianni: "The past 26 years have been an amazing ride of challenges, victories, defeats and memorable experiences. But above everything else, what I will remember most are the incredible people I have been blessed to work with. I’ve been planning this retirement for a couple years now, and the time is right for me and my family to look forward to the next adventure in our lives." (link)
Maryland AD Evans will partner with Parker to execute a FB HC search for the Terps. Evans: "I've started my work. [...] We’ve got to find someone who understands our community, our locale...someone who understands the situation that we’ve just gone through, someone who could help us build back up that public trust, build back that confidence in what we’re trying to do here as a football program with the community. [...] I’m looking at someone who is a CEO, who can deal with the media, who understands the community, who understands Xs and Os, someone who can recruit well." Evans declines to pin down a timeline for his decision. (link)
Stadium's McMurphy hit the wire with more alleged developments at Ohio State, reporting former FB AC Smith & former FB student-athlete Grimes (now at Florida) had a physical altercation in practice that included Smith using racially-charged language. McMurphy further said OSU officials covered up the incident. Push back from Columbus came quick & strong with Bucks AD Smith, university Prez Drake & a number of student-athletes refuting McMurphy's claims. OSU AD Smith with a long conversation with The Athletic's Wasserman, includes, "Having someone in our environment that would use racist terminologies as accused is unacceptable. So when we heard the accusation, I think it was a week ago, Ari, we talked to all the players about the incident on the field. We talked to our trainers. We talked to our strength coach. Everybody who was there. Everyone denied it. They all said it was unequivocally not true." On McMurphy's work, "It’s not my place. It’s his boss’s place to comment on that." More. (link); Follow-up reports indicated Buckeyes FB HC Meyer was thinking about legal action against McMurphy & Sports Illustrated legal expert McCann breaks it down in a piece titled, "Ohio State Would Face a Hard Legal Road If It Were to Sue Brett McMurphy." (link)
College Football Playoff: Here's the full transcript with committee chair & Oregon AD Mullens as the Top 10 didn't change one bit from last week. Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame & Michigan still in the key four slots. Mullens: "I say this all the time, but it bears repeating. The committee operates under a very disciplined process in which we talk extensively about every team we rank, from team No. 1 to team No. 25. We discuss in depth the strength and the weaknesses of each. We take nothing for granted, and we carefully work our way through every position in the rankings." Still points to UCF's strength of schedule, notes struggles for Oklahoma's defense, says the committee doesn't try to predict the future, can't judge how much a canceled game for West Virginia (against N.C. State) might be impacting the Mountaineers. More. (link); CFP Executive Director Hancock says recusals in the vetting process aren't an issue as at the moment it applies most to Oklahoma AD Castiglione & former Virginia Tech HC Beamer, whose son is on the OU staff. (link); West Virginia HC Holgorsen understands the popularity of the CFP rankings show, but says he doesn't give it a second glance, calls it "reality TV," plus, "It doesn’t do me any good. It doesn’t do our players any good." (link)
Little Rock AD Conque pens alongside MIP Consulting's Prine for AthleticDirectorU on the topic of creating a winning culture that allows team members to thrive. Notable: "Yes, there is a science for predicting human performance within the workplace the same way as your coaches use analytics to predict on-field behavior. Call it what you will, the opportunity exists to create an optimized workforce off the field to drive success on it." 1) Know Your Environment (includes Internal & External Hiring Decision Considerations); 2) Set the Standards (Strategic & Alignment frameworks for hiring a coach); and, 3) Paint the Picture (four on-boarding considerations). Southern Miss won't be playing a 12th FB game after all. The Golden Eagles sit at 4-5 & will need to win both of its remaining kicks (vs. Louisiana Tech, at UTEP) to achieve bowl eligibility. (link); The new Myrtle Beach Bowl will be played at Coastal Carolina & will join the bowl lineup during the 2020 rotation. More news out of East Lansing as former Michigan State FB staff member Blackwell has filed suit against the university, former Prez Simon, former AD Hollis, FB HC Dantonio & others as he claims his rights were violated when he was wrongly accused of helping to cover up sexual assault issues for FB student-athletes. In the suit, "With no evidence, none, that plaintiff covered up for the athletes, the MSU Police Department, in stormtrooper fashion cuffed plaintiff; seized his personal and MSU cell phones and hauled him off to the MSU Police station." No charges were ever brought against Blackwell, who is looking for $75K in damages, an award of lost wages, fringe benefits & a statement from the defendants that they retaliated after he refused to speak to MSU Police. (link)
Colorado AD George on reports he's already decided to make a FB HC change, "We do not comment on speculation or unsubstantiated rumors with anonymous sources. Let me just say I have made no decisions regarding the future of the football program. As I’ve stated in the past, we continually evaluate all aspects of all of our 17 intercollegiate sport programs." Buffs HC MacIntyre: "There’s always going to be chatter. Who knows who the source is? Who knows who the booster was? I don’t know who it is. They can say anything they want to say. For an anonymous story to come out with no quoted source is kind of gutless, the way I see it. But that’s the world we live in, too. I understand that." (link)
Auburn Prez Leath stands behind Tigers AD Greene, says FB HC Malzahn will be back on The Plains next season, "Well, I hired what I think is a first-class athletic director in Allen Greene. He’s doing a first-class job, so I stand with Allen — and Allen I think was pretty clear with his comments about Gus being here next year. So, I don’t really have anything to add to that specifically." (link)
"It’s awful what has happened to us. I don’t like it when people talk about health and welfare of the student athletes, when you get back here between 2:30 and 4:30 in the morning and then the next day there’s not much you can do with them. And when that continually happens, that’s not fair." No, that's not a Pac-12 FB HC, it's actually UConn boss Edsall as his Huskies will play at ECU on Saturday with a 7p kick, the fourth AAC road game with a night start. Edsall goes on to say the popular term should be "athlete-student, not student-athlete," also, "There’s going to be a lot of big-time problems moving forward with the model that they currently have. Eventually, it wouldn’t surprise me if kids boycott." (link)
The Athletic's Emerson takes a look at turnstile numbers for Georgia FB versus the regularly announced attendance of a sellout at 92,746. From 2015-17: "Lower-tier opponents drew an average of 68,754 tickets […] Power-conference opponents drew an average of 76,942 tickets used." Scroll down for a game-by-game breakdown & more analysis. (link); Speaking of tickets, a proposal in front of the Ohio State BoT later this week will propose increasing FB prices by 8% for next season with a freeze through 2020 for student ticket prices. More Personnel: Embattled USC FB HC Helton on where he thinks his job stands: "I have a lot of support from [athletic director] Lynn Swann. Lynn, every Monday, walks into my office and has given me nothing but, 'Coach, we're in this for the long haul. We're going to get this done.' That's what I've felt from day one and what I felt after the Cal game also. I know, in my heart, I'm going to be here." (link); Plane tracking continues in Lawrence, as reports indicate Kansas AD Long flew to Colorado Springs yesterday. Oh the drama. (link); Saint Francis (PA) WBB HC Haigh will take a leave of absence for personal reasons. AD Robinson Fruchtl, who coached the team from 2007-2012, will step in as interim. (link); American extends WBB HC Gebbia through the 2023-24 season. (link); Binghamton extends MBB HC Dempsey through the 2020-21 season. He is 48-140 in six seasons with the Bearcats. Texas AD Del Conte further clarifies what happened last Saturday night when Twitter lit up with reports he had been ejected from FB's win over Texas Tech. Del Conte: "I was on the sideline and I can confirm there was some raucous heckling coming from the fans toward the officials. I was collateral damage as a result of the taunting and temporarily requested to leave the sideline area by said officials, who thought I was among those taking jabs at their work. Fortunately, one of Lubbock's finest police officers was standing next to me and confirmed I had nothing to do with the boisterous activity and I was allowed to remain on the field." (link)
Loyola Chicago AD Watson recalls getting a note on his desk on his first day leading the Ramblers from Sister Jean with a scouting report on some of his new staffers. More from Watson on Sister Jean, "She hasn’t changed because of this, because of the run last year. She stayed true to herself and it was almost like we were able to introduce this unbelievably special person that’s been a part of Loyola for a long time to the rest of the world. And the rest of the world was able to see what a neat lady she is. The impact was phenomenal. Obviously, it was just another part of our story that really resonated with people across the country and internationally. […] A number of folks mentioned that the run the basketball team had – and while it didn’t end the way that we wanted it to – it really changed the university, and as she said and many people said, it’ll never be the same here because of that." (link)
New/Expanded Digs: Santa Clara unveils plans for its new Athletic Excellence Center thanks to two massive lead gifts of $15M & $10M. Overall cost: $38, all to be privately generated. Two practice hoops gyms, nutrition station, academic center, sports medicine space & center, new external scoreboard for tennis, more. Pretty nice rendering video if you scroll down a bit. Also looks like the Broncos took out a full page ad in the Spokesman-Review to celebrate its sparkling new facility after Gonzaga MBB HC Few made some comments back during media days about other WCC programs needing to invest. Santa Clara AD Baumgartner: "We wanted to set the record straight that Santa Clara University is investing and we have made a commitment." (link, link); Illinois gets $3M for a new indoor 26,000 square foot Baseball facility. $8M overall project, completion by 2021. (link); Utah's trustees green light the $80M bonding strategy to expand Rice-Eccles Stadium. Athletic revenues will cover the bonds, no university funds. Completion hoped for by August of 2021. (link)
Fundraising, continued: Davidson alum & former student-athlete Bryan donates $1M to the Wildcats to be split evenly between LAX & Wrestling for scholarships. Davidson AD Clune: "Nobody in the country is doing what we do. Scholarships are undeniably the most important thing to bring the best student athletes—the best students overall—to Davidson. We have to invest on the front end to build our programs." (link); Georgia Tech's $120M Athletics Initiative push has surged past the $50M mark, close to having enough for full renovations to MBB & WBB locker rooms, as well as the next phase of upgrades for Russ Chandler Stadium. (link); Cal gets "two significant gifts" from former Water Polo student-athlete Wagner for an endowed scholarship & naming of the team room. (link)
As we look for any morsel of news in the Department of Justice's review of the Learfield-IMG College merger, DOJ antirust boss Delrahim was on CNBC to respond to a critical New York Times editorial by Columbia professor Wu. When asked about the DOJ's overall role in mergers & acquisitions, "We're just there to police the markets. We're not picking winners and losers, we are not trying to choose which technologies -- frankly we're just not smart enough to be doing that. All we can do is make sure the markets are free, for new entrants to come in and topple the old ones." More: "I believe in structural solutions." (link)
