The Church is present in new ways

Our worship of God and our care for one another continues but the church building is now closed as the Church of England responds to the covid 19 crisis. The only access to church is for the maintenance and upkeep of the building. Prayers and services can only take place virtually. We are doing everything we can to keep in touch and to help people find ways of connecting with each other. We are currently using email, zoom and WhatsApp to connect - if you would like to join in with things but don't know how please just call us on 07598 518426

If there is anyway you think we can help please do not hesitate to get in touch.

A number of healthy and mobile church members are offering their services to help with food deliveries etc. If you need practical help please do not hesitate to call.

Introducing...

Karl, Anna and Ben

Introducing...

We are Karl, Anna and Ben (the lurcher). We are originally from Kent, but moved to Germany to teach at an English International School (2017 - 2019). Then decided to move to Yorkshire in the summer of 2019, to settle down and start our family; starting with rescuing Ben from Battersea. Anna and I are both Year 3 teachers in Hull (different schools) and Ben is beginning to be sponsored by several companies on Instagram for being such a good and beautiful boy. I have some family on the Avenues in Hull and my parents are about to retire to Roos. Anna's Mum is a retired languages teacher and lives in Germany. Ben - we don't know about his family history, but he is a very good boy.

Our connection to St Mary's Church

Anna and I both feel like we are "at home" whenever we walk into St. Mary's and regularly attend the 11:15 service, among other activities and events organised or hosted by the church.

What brings us joy...
Ben is our primary source of joy (as well as each other). However, we also thoroughly enjoy travelling to discover new places and cultures. We love spending our time enjoying a wide range of outdoor activities including cycling, trampolining, walking, hiking, kayaking, Scouting, swimming and many others.

We are passionate about...
Both Anna and I are extremely passionate about working with children and young people. Not only in the classroom but through Scouting and clubs as well. We enjoy helping children and young people develop and grow academically, spiritually, as well as helping them find their individual talents and passions. We are both also very passionate about the arts, particularly performing arts of which we equally enjoy watching and performing.

What encourages our faith...
Anna has recently rediscovered her faith under my influence and through completing the Alpha course at St Mary's. I have always been brought up within a Christian faith and been surrounded by Christians throughout my childhood. From this, I find faith is natural to me and just the way to live but I am most inspired and encouraged by children and young people - they are so often readily acceptable of Christian teachings and stories and usually question on a deeper level to enhance understanding. I have also seen such inspiring blind faith and statements from children and young people that its difficult not to be inspired by them.

Thank you to the small army of folk who helped deliver daffodils on Sunday while making sure to keep the required social distancing.

We could not deliver to every house due to the present limitations imposed on us so please receive this virtual bunch of daffodils if you didn't receive any physically

A simple form of evening prayer and candle lighting *

At St Mary's we would like to invite you to join us in a short time of prayer every day at 7pm. It involves lighting a candle and placing it in the window and then saying the following prayers as individuals or as households. I have picked readings for each day and this week's theme is that of peace.

The Lord almighty grant us a quiet night and a perfect end. Amen.

Our help is in the name of the Lord
who made heaven and earth.

A period of silence for reflection on the past day may follow.

O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.

The following may be said or listened to

Before the ending of the day,
Creator of the world, we pray
That you, with steadfast love, would keep
Your watch around us while we sleep.

Monday

Thursday

Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit. Friday

You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. (Isaiah 26:3)

Paul Raynor

Many of you already know that Paul Raynor died a week last Sunday. Unfortunately, due to the present regulations we are unable to hold a service in church to celebrate his life at this time. However, we will be celebrating his 60th birthday and life in church on Saturday 19th September.

Paul was a remarkable man, with a deep love for his family, his work (he was highly respected by colleagues and clients alike) and the horses. Recently he asked to be Confirmed and the Bishop of Hull (Alison White) came to Beverley to lead a beautiful and moving service in his home.

Paul's fortitude and bravery were present until the very end and he died at home with Lavinia and their children nearby. Lavinia's love and care for Paul during a difficult illness has been amazing and we continue to hold her in our prayers. The kindness she has received from church has helped sustain her and she is very grateful.

Thanks to the Revd Ali Doolan

We would like to pay tribue to Ali's dedication, faith and warmth over the last six years. Ali joined us first as a student on placement, then as our curate and finally as our associate Vicar. She contributed an enormous amount to the life of our church:- developing the church welcomers scheme and the pastoral care team. Her heart from the beginning was to be alongside those who are in residential and nursing care. She looked after the services in several care homes and offered oversight to Churches' Together in this area. The sincerity of her preaching was highly valued and on a personal level her encouragement and friendship was a gift to me and many others.

We will all be sad to see her move on but we trust her discernment and recognise that there is a time and season for all things (Ecclesiastes 3) and that God will continue to bless her as he calls her on in his service.

For those of you who would like to contribute to Ali's leaving present, there is still the opportunity to do so. You can pop an envelope through the church hall letter box or contact us to give electronically.
