A Letter from Your Elder

Dear Church,

Once again we begin our trek through the centuries in observing Advent, the season of anticipation and waiting focused on Jesus. Just as we remember the long wait of God's people for the promised Savior, we await his return from Heaven to gather us together and begin his rule on earth.

Our waiting is, in some ways, easier than that of those in former days, because we know Jesus already came the first time. But those who love God in the days before Christ's birth had the reality of prophecies that came true, miracles done, and deliverances accomplished. Still, they were not prepared for Jesus' arrival. I wonder if we are prepared for it now.

It is our hope as a staff that your Advent will do two things. First, that it will remind you of God's great story of redemption and how Christ was its fulfillment. But we also hope that it will begin to stir our minds and hearts to a greater anticipation of Jesus' return. That would mean holding on to this world's hopes less, and to eternal priorities more. Read this week's devotional as preparation for Sunday's thoughts on hope - our first Advent theme.

Sincerely,
Pastor Craig

Dealing with Loss at Christmas

"Christmas—it’s a time of wonder, magic, joy, peace and those warm-hearted feelings that make December “the most wonderful time of the year.” But for those of us who have lost loved ones, this season may be marked by grief, loneliness, doubt and fear. Traditions that used to bring joy now bring a flood of tears. Crowded rooms feel hauntingly lonely because someone is missing. Nothing feels the same. Our hearts echo the hymn lyrics, “O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel, that mourns in lonely exile here.”"
