OPPORTUNITIES
STUDENT FEATURE
Esther Cyna, Ph.D. candidate in The History of Education program, presented at the History of Education society annual meeting in Albuquerque recently.

"Leandro v. State of North Carolina (1996): Urban, Suburban and Rural Districts in School Finance Litigation"

From Esther: "I look at historical struggles to equalize resources in rural and urban school districts in North Carolina, from desegregation to the Leandro school finance case in the 1990s, and I pay particular attention to the rise of standards-based reform and the implications for educational advocacy in the state. My trip to HES was made possible by the Provost's Grant for Conference Presentation & Professional Development, and I am grateful for this support."
Alexa Rodriguez, Ph.D. candidate in The History of Education program, presented at the History of Education society annual meeting in Albuquerque recently.

"Education as Foreign Policy: Educational Reforms during U.S. Occupation in the Dominican Republic, 1916-1924"

From Alexa: "Starting next week, I will be finished with comprehensive exams and will be working on my proposal. I am interested in thinking about education and empire as well as how education policies are translated to different contexts.

As part of the grad student committee we helped organize panels on social media (with Professors Christine A. Woyshner from Temple University and Jon Hale, University of South Carolina) and publish journal articles (with Professors Isaac Gottesman from Iowa State University, Kathryn Nicholas from University of Washington and Joy Ann Williamson Lott from University of Washington) as well as host a grad student networking event."
Nicole Johnson, an EdD student in the Art & Art Education program, recently defended her dissertation proposal “Becoming an Art Teacher Educator: Early-Career Art Education Faculty Members’ Navigations of Professional Tensions”.

From Nicole: "I explore the ways in which newly-hired faculty in art education programs negotiate the construction of new professional identities and personal pedagogies of teacher education during the career-transition from K-12 art teaching (and other pathways) into this role."
