Hello Youth Outdoor Network Liaisons,

I reckon everyone had a great Thanksgiving break!

Welcoming the month of December also means that winter is just around the corner! Here at The Nature Connection we are in the process of scheduling out our ski trips and I would like to begin the conversation about providing opportunities for the Youth Outdoor Network to get outside on cross-country skis.

Last year, Sarah took some students out on an overnight weekend trip and stayed in the Skyway warming hut on the Mesa. Ben also overnighted with students before the HS ski day in March. I feel like it all went very well to have students from all the high schools join together for a few hours of skiing. We were also able to host an avalanche lesson from Friends of the San Juans that same afternoon.

It would be great for TNC to host a similar event this year. My first question would be - what month will work best for all schools? I have a few dates open in January, February and March. If everyone can please contact me about the month - we can move forward to schedule a date for the YON ski trip. Is the week of December 17th at all a possibility for schools if snow levels continue to accumulate?

I would like to also throw out a couple of ideas:

-First, if you are interested in renting some skis (or snowshoes!) this winter for your YON students, please let me know and we will start planning for it. If all schools would like to individually take out students it will be best to host a short training for the proper use of the ski gear.

-Second, would any of your students be interested in learning more about our winter outdoor education programs and how they operate? If so, we have plenty of opportunities to bring a student or two along on a classroom presentation and/or a youth field trip. I see this as a great opportunity for students to shadow TNC environmental educators and understand what it might be like to work in the outdoor education field. I personally changed my college career path after being exposed to the idea that I could learn to teach youth in the outdoors. I think there is a wealth of learning when the students are able to see a professional firsthand in their job. Presentations will be held in December and field trips begin in January and run all the way through March.

If everyone could please respond on these topics, we can plan on some exciting opportunities for your students this winter.

Thanks in advance!
