Dear Alameda Community,

As we finish the Thanksgiving Holiday and look ahead to Christmas break, I am reminded of how quickly the year goes by! This has been faster than the rest. I have two middle schoolers this year and my oldest will start high school next year! I blink and it’s almost 2019!

I want to express gratitude this month for Alameda. I am truly lucky in that I get to come to a job every day that I love and work with people who inspire me and who are fun to work with! I want to express a special thanks this month for all the people at Alameda who do the work behind the scenes to make sure we can all do our jobs. Matt Dutton and his team of Curtis and Suzie who are constantly working to keep our school clean and ready to roll each morning. Darlene and Nicole who keep all our kids fed every day in the cafeteria and last but not least, Elaine and Nancy in the front office who literally keep us all organized and together. I am thankful for the hard work of all staff at Alameda and also for the parents who are always so supportive. Whenever I give school tours people must think I’m a braggart because I speak so highly of our school, staff, and community. I cannot say enough about how lovely it is to come into work every day to Alameda.

As we swing into the last few weeks before break, the weather will start getting colder and wetter. Please make sure to send jackets, gloves, etc., as we do still go outside every day we can. On the flip side of that, also please encourage your student to check lost and found as we bring in any left hats, coats, sweaters at the end of 5th grade recess every day and they collect in lost and found until you pick them up!

Thanks again for all you do to support us and Happy Holidays to you and yours.

Sincerely,
Dr. Eryn Berg

PTA Meeting this Wednesday!

Please join the PTA for a special two-hour meeting on Wednesday, November 28th. The meeting will include a discussion of the youth novel George by Alex Gino, as well as an exploration of how we can be allies for trans and gender-non-conforming members of our community, and how we cultivate acceptance in our children.

The meeting will be from 6-8 PM in the cafeteria.
Dinner and childcare provided by the PTA.

Lost & Found: Items of Value

The office has a few items of higher value in the lost and found including a wallet with money but no identification, Fitbit, and ear buds. You will need to provide a description of the item to Elaine or Nancy in the office before the items can be released.

Alameda Night at Blackbird Wine Shop

Thursday, December 6

Grab some friends and start your holidays off right! Join us for a wine tasting night at Blackbird Wine Shop on Thursday, December, 6th. The event will run from 6-9 PM and a portion of the proceeds will go directly back to our school. Andy, the owner, has even agreed to discount and wrap bottles of wine for holiday gifts. Don't miss out on this event - it is a must! Be sure to mention that you are an Alameda supporter!

Rescheduled Meeting for Alameda Parents for Racial Equity

Alameda Parents for Racial Equity has moved their next meeting to Monday, December 3rd. The topic for this month's meeting is Implicit Bias.

All sessions are from 6-8PM in the library with dinner and childcare provided by the PTA (dinner starts at 5:45PM). The schedule for future gatherings of Alameda Parents for Racial Equity are here or on the school's online calendar.

SCRIP Orders Due December 3!

Did you realize that SCRIP is back with new online ordering each month for the 2018-2019 school year?

Scrip is a dollar for dollar fundraiser which benefits Alameda at no cost to you! You purchase gift cards for groceries, Amazon, pizza, coffee, and so much more from us, and we buy the gift cards at a discount (4% to 30%, depending on merchant) and keep the difference. All Scrip proceeds go directly to Alameda Elementary.

Over the last two months, together we have raised over $300 for our school. The Scrip goal is to have 50 families place orders each month. Please help us make that a reality.

Target or Amazon gift cards can be purchased, and they make perfect holiday gifts for your child's teacher!

To learn more about SCRIP and place your order, please visit our SCRIP page on the Alameda website.

Orders are due by December 3 for delivery December 6.

Passport Club Call for Volunteers

Passport Club is looking for a co-lead volunteer. Our current lead needs help with passport check-in days. We need another person who can help with set-up and break down, greet the classrooms/students, and manage the queue of students waiting for a checker. You will get to know the 2nd-5th grade teaching teams and spend time with your child and their friends.  If you're interested in learning more please contact Meghan Walstatter at passportclub@alamedaschool.org

We also need people to help quiz the kids and get them stamps on Friday, December 14th. It's fun and helps with this valuable activity for our kids.
No geography knowledge needed! Sign up here.

Please consider donating a “Sign Up Party” to the Alameda Round-Up Auction!

What is a Sign Up Party, you say?
A Sign Up party is a meal, backyard mixer, athletic event, lesson, conversation or other type of gathering for adults or kids or both (the possibilities are endless!) hosted by an Alameda family to benefit the Alameda Foundation. Auction attendees will have an opportunity to purchase a “spot” at a Sign Up party for a set contribution to the foundation (no bidding required.)

Hosting a Sign Up party is a wonderful way to leverage your talents and hospitality to benefit our school and the broader PPS community. Make a mean apple pie? Host an apple pie making class! Love leading book group? Host a book discussion over wine and cheese! Have a stash of board games? Host a family game night for kids and adults! Grab a friend, brainstorm an idea, and step up to support our school while making new Alameda friends.

Sign Up Party Host Forms will be headed home in backpacks soon, but you can also submit your party information online.

Questions? We are here to help you think of ideas, set the price per spot, etc. Please contact Emily Merrill.

Joining the PTA is a great way to get involved in your child or children’s education at Alameda and education issues generally. Your tax-deductible $25* membership helps sustain PTA programs at Alameda and supports child-first lobbying efforts in Oregon and Washington, DC. While you do not need to be a PTA member to participate in Alameda PTA meetings and activities, membership allows you to vote on chapter decisions and policies, serve on the PTA board, and participate in statewide and national PTA conferences, committees, and trainings.

Please consider joining us in our efforts to enhance and support the educational experience for all Alameda students and their families!

Erich Stiefvater
VP of Membership
