This year, doctoral candidate Alison Reilly, a fellow at the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience, gave lectures and curated exhibitions centered on her research into the role of art and culture in the American war effort in the 1940s. She presented “Art in the Service of America,” at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City in early November, and designed two exhibitions opening in Florida in early 2019.

This fall members of the Art History faculty initiated the Hurricane Lecture Series to share their research and make up for class hours lost during Hurricane Michael. The final lecture in the series will be held this Friday, November 30 at 4 pm in G40 WJB. Dr. Lynn Jones will present Praise-Worthy Ornaments: Gift-giving and Display in Medieval Armenia.

Lauren Gleason (BA '05) is the Site Manager of the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum, a busy historic site museum in Alexandria, Virginia, in the suburbs of Washington, DC.

The Department of Art History is excited to welcome Florida State University alumnus Dr. James Frazier as the new dean of the College of Fine Arts, effective June 17, 2019. Frazier, who earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Florida State, has served on the faculty of the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Arts Department of Dance and Choreography since 2001. His tenure at VCU includes a year as interim dean of the school.

This fall Associate Professor Lynn Jones presented a talk on medieval Armenian ornament at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Armenia! Symposium, and received a a Robert B. Bradley Library Research Grant of $10,000 toward the purchase for the FSU Libraries' Special Collections of a rare facsimile.

Doctoral candidate Stephanie Bender presented a paper on Ringl + Pit, a commercial studio in Weimar Berlin run by two women photographers, at the South Atlantic Modern Language Association (SAMLA) Conference, on the panel Women of the Avant-Garde and Political Dissent: Resisting Power from the Margins

Undergraduates in the fall Information Technology for Art Historians class are researching and writing articles this month for the spring department newsletters and website – a new course project designed to promote collaboration and media skills.

The Art History Association invites graduate students to submit papers in February 2019 for the I. N. Winbury Award. The award, the financial component of which is $200 to be put toward book purchases, is presented annually by the graduate students in the department to one MA student and one PhD student.

On November 16, 2018, the College of Fine Arts hosted the second annual CFA Student Showcase. Representing Art History, Meg Barrett presented her honor's thesis research "Order and Passion: The Impact of Travel on Delacroix’s 'Cleopatra and the Peasant'" and doctoral candidate Gabriela Germana presented research from her dissertation, "Doing It Their Own Way: From Traditional Aesthetics to Artistic Images: The Paintings of Sarhua, Peru."
