Editorial

The recent Research Communications Workshop we had organized here in Bonn for our member institutes' communications people has exceeded all our expectations. 23 happy and inspired participants went home after a rich peer-to-peer exchange on a bunch of communication issues. Apart from the decision to have similar meetings now on a regular basis, the most tangible outcome was the set-up of a permanent research communications working group. We will inform you of further details as soon as the working group is officially established. If you'd like to know more about hot topics in research communication, we've put together some impressions on our blog.
From our blog
Today we've got two new articles for you: In "Why We Need Alternatives to Development" Ashish Kothari et al. make the case for a fundamental social-economic transformation: "As nation-states and civil society gear up for the SDGs, it is imperative to lay out criteria to help people identify what truly is transformative. These include a shift to well-being approaches based on radical, direct democracy, the localization and democratization of the economy, social justice and equity...". The article is an excerpt of the introduction to their forthcoming book "Pluriverse: A Post-Development Dictionary". Read more
Our second piece, "Let's Talk about Communication", is all about making the voice of science heard. Why researchers and communicators actually need each other? Why are policymakers such a difficult audience and why most press releases land in the bin? An interesting read especially for researchers! Read more
EADI / Fingo Session at Development Days 2019

How could we benefit from the work of each other and jointly promote global justice and transformative learning?" Read more

Highlight - ECDPM Discussion Paper

In the proposal for its next budget (2021-2027), the European Commission envisages a major restructuring of its external action architecture that reflects the EU’s ambition to pursue a more strategic, political and interest-driven external action. It includes the creation of a ‘Neighbourhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument’ (NDICI) worth €89.2 billion, and of global scope. Up to 75% of funds are intended for political cooperation with partner countries and regions.
This discussion paper by the European Centre for Development Policy Management (ECDPM) is an initial analysis of how the EU institutions are currently preparing for the next bilateral programming process. While there have been a number of encouraging developments, some potential policy-to-practice gaps need to be addressed early in the process, to ensure that the NDICI fulfils all of the EU’s external action aspirations.
