Happy Holidays from The Animal Guardian Society!

Before things get too crazy this holiday season, we want to update our TAGS supporters on what 2018 (our 31st year!) brought us.

It was a busy one, with a total of 140 animals coming into care—double our intake from the year before. This is a huge number for our 100% volunteer-powered rescue, and we're proud to have saved so many lives. All 140 animals were housed in a loving volunteer foster home (we don't have a shelter).

Every dog and cat has a story—some find themselves in local shelters after never being picked up, some are surrendered by owners who can no longer keep them, and still others are saved from harsh living conditions in remote communities in Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec. We would like to share the stories of some of this year's rescues.

Meet Bernhardt.

Of course, we don’t know his original name.

That's because he was found tied to a bench in Ajax. He's an old Spaniel with a large growth hanging off the side of his face and two cherry eyes. He sat at the shelter waiting for his family for a week... but no one ever came.

A concerned citizen saw him at the shelter and alerted us. The shelter had described him as aggressive, and felt his growth was likely cancer—their rationale for ending his life.

One of our volunteers went to meet him and discovered an absolute gem of a dog. He was friendly, sweet, and happy to meet everyone. Clearly, he had belonged to someone and been part of a family in his previous life.

We never refuse an animal for medical reasons, so we found a foster home for him, and Bernhardt left the pound to start the rest of his life. We arranged the much-needed surgery to repair his cherry eyes, remove the growth, and get sterilized (a bill that ended up over $2,000).

As he healed, he revealed more of his outstanding demeanour (and his love of swimming!) We received a wonderful application for him, and we're happy to report that Bernhardt, now named Rudy, is living the dream with his new family.
