Dear Members, 

We're recovering from a fabulous 'Strictly Dancing Evening' at Amishi as part of our BPF Female Entrepreneurs and Leaders Club (under the BPF Women's Programme). BPF Patron of the Month: Muhammad Ali Khwaja
Ali is the CEO of Oxford Frontier Capital and a Managing Director in KASB Securities in Pakistan. Oxford Frontier is a frontier markets focused investment firm. Previously, he was a Partner at Autonomous Research in London, where he led equity research of European PayTech companies.

Before Autonomous, Ali was the CFO of SafeCharge Group (LSE: SCH LN), a leading merchant acquirer, card issuer and payment processing company. Ali was also the CEO of SafeCharge's subsidiary in Dublin. Prior to this, he has been a fund manager investing in EMEA markets and a leading technology analyst at Berenberg and UBS.

Ali was ranked as a Top 3 Technology Analyst in Europe by Thomson Reuters in 2013. He was selected as a Young Global Leader by Georgetown University and is a Rhodes Scholar (Oxford University). At KASB, Ali's role is to connect global capital with growth companies in frontier markets such as Pakistan.

Naseem Amin-Venture Partner at Advent

Naseem joined Advent in 2014 bringing 24 years of trans-Atlantic industry experience in R and D, corporate development, business development, and marketing. Naseem most recently served as Chief Scientific Officer at Smith and Nephew, where he oversaw corporate R&D, divisional manufacturing, QA/QC and product development functions. Prior to Smith and Nephew, Naseem led business development at both Biogen Idec and at Genzyme Therapeutics, for both of which companies, he initiated and executed a number of transformative acquisitions and transactions. He has also led the clinical development of five currently marketed therapeutic products. Naseem started his career at Baxter Healthcare where he had executive roles in marketing, product development and clinical research. In addition to his role at Advent, Naseem currently works as a board member and advisor to several not for profit organisations. Naseem is a qualified medical doctor, from the Royal Free & University College Medical School, London and has an MBA from Kellogg Graduate School of Management.

Ladies please join us at an "Inspirational Evening with Lucy" at Lucy Choi (18 Connaught Street, London W2 2AF) on the 6th of December from 6:30pm to 8:30pm under the BPF Female Entrepreneurs and Leaders Club. This event will include a talk and Q&A with Lucy Choi on her journey as an entrepreneur followed by networking over drinks and nibbles and amazing discounts on the beautiful shoes! 

The aim of the BPF Female Entrepreneurs and Leaders Club (under the BPF Women's Programme) is to provide an opportunity for women from a wide range of backgrounds and industry sectors to network, provide peer to peer support, exchange ideas, refer work and collaborate.

BPF Partners with Stairs and Shares to present weekly "Knowledge Cafes for Entrepreneurs" | artFix London | The RSA | September-November 2018

British Pakistan Foundation has partnered with Stairs and Shares to bring you weekly "Knowledge Cafe for Entrepreneurs" at both artFix and at The RSA in London. These micro sessions are based on the knowledge cafe concept that Stairs and Shares have developed over the last 6 years. They help Entrepreneurs gain clarity and direction with their projects. These sessions use social learning and peer to peer approach. 

The lunch time cafes will start every Monday from 17th September, and are kindly being hosted by 
artFix at their new location in Woolwich. They will be 30 minute one on one sessions on a variety of topics relevant to entrepreneurs. 

Zulfikar Deo (the co-founder of this group) will be hosting these sessions. He has worked with and supported entrepreneurs for 16 years. He is a UK Top 50 Business Adviser for 2014. He co-creates innovation with entrepreneurs.

There will also be evening Knowledge Cafes every Thursday from 13th September, starting at 6pm, which will be held at
The RSA. These will be walk-ins for a maximum of 10 people, so get there early!

Two business support specialists will be here to help. They are:
  • Gerry - He has supported entrepreneurs here for 7 years. He used to work for successful entrepreneur Lord Hamlyn. Now he supports entrepreneurs in building and growing their businesses.
  • Kassim - He has supported entrepreneurs here for 6 years. He worked at HSBC for over 10 years and currently runs his own tech business.

NEW Tech Women
TechWomen is an initiative of the U.S. Department of State that brings emerging women leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) from Africa, South and Central Asia, and the Middle East together with their professional counterparts in the United States for a mentorship and exchange program based in San Francisco. During the five-week program, participants engage in project-based mentorships at leading companies in the San Francisco Bay Area and Silicon Valley.
 
The 2019 program will include 108 women from Algeria, Cameroon, Egypt, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestinian Territories, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Zimbabwe.
 
Applications are due January 16, 2019. We are looking for women who have demonstrated themselves as emerging leaders in their chosen profession, through their work experience, volunteer experience, community activities and education. Controls Systems Engineer / Milton Keynes / £ Negotiable

This is a Full time permanent role

Overview
You will develop on board control software for the ESS battery and other systems supporting the team's Formula 1 programme in order to ensure that performance and reliability targets are met. This role is accountable for all aspects of ESS software from initial concept, simulation study and architecture to software development and verification including all the necessary tools, equipment and process. The role will be required to liaise with development teams in the group, chassis team, supplier and to deliver software according to the schedule defined by company management.

Responsibilities: 
•    ESS software development and plant model development
•    Requirements analysis and system specification
•    Software and digital communications architecture
•    Modelling and simulation of battery control systems
•    Software reliability and fault tolerant design
•    Software validation and testing
•    Software development process, documentation and releasing
•    Tools supporting development and testing
•    Fault diagnosis and factory-based support of trackside activities
•    Development of bespoke software for test equipment and experiments

Requirements: 
•    A qualified embedded software or control engineer with an excellent track record in a large technical organisation within F1 or similar technology business
•    Knows about the application of best practice software process and tools
•    Ability to identify root cause of issues both in design and process
•    Fluency in spoken and written English is essential. Competence in Japanese or another European language is desirable
•    Competence and licence to drive in the UK
•    Domestic Travel and Travel overseas will be required
•    PC literate
•    Team player with particular strength in influencing technical staff
•    Excellent communication and technical skills and high level of attention to detail
•    High level of personal resilience in order to deal with tight deadlines, rapidly changing priorities and high tempo environment
•    Approachable, with balanced judgment and a high level of personal integrity.
•    Able to plan, organize and deliver software projects
•    Self-motivated and competitive
