D1.jobs: New opportunities below at UNLV & UC San Diego. Post your team openings in the same space where thousands of administrators get their news seven mornings a week. Click here to get started.
The ECU Board of Trustees are set to meet tomorrow at 1pm EST & the North State Journal reports, "According to several sources with knowledge of the situation, Southern Mississippi athletic director Jon Gilbert is expected to be the choice to fill the position that has been vacant since Jeff Compher was asked to resign last March. […] The timing will allow Gilbert to make an evaluation of the Pirates’ struggling football program and presumably hire his own coach once Scottie Montgomery is fired as expected following Saturday’s season finale at NC State." (link, link)
NET: The first set of rankings from the NCAA featured a Top 5 of Ohio State, Virginia, Texas Tech, Michigan & Gonzaga. Also, 17 non-'Power 6' programs in the Top 50. (link - full rankings); In terms of conference rankings, the Big Ten, ACC, Big 12, Big East & SEC took the first five spots with the Pac-12, WCC, AAC, MAC & SoCon the next five. (link); The first release drew heavy criticism, including from notable quant, 538's Silver, "These are the worst rankings I've ever seen in any sport, ever. NCAA needs to go completely back to the drawing board. […] I also think, philosophically, NET suffers from a 'throw a bunch of metrics at the wall and see what sticks' problem, which is often characteristic of unthoughtful algorithm design, instead of having considered more deeply what it's actually trying to predict or achieve." (link); CBSSports.com's Norlander, "...the efficiency component doesn't appear to consider quality of opponent on a team's schedule. So within that, a team's efficiency numbers could theoretically vault or tumble its ranking in the NET. It's a potential loophole for the 10-point cap on scoring margin. Another lingering issue is adjusted winning percentage, which seems to have overlap in the overall formula. Teams are getting double credit for its wins and losses, and taking some of the data accrued in the team value index's criteria." More. (link); Michigan State Assoc. AD & KPI's namesake, "Full KPI rankings will be published in the next week or two once the sample size has grown. A sneak peek: Kansas is No. 1 in KPI. Best road win is Ohio State's win at Creighton. Best neutral site win is Gonzaga over Duke. That's all for now." (link)
SEC Drama: Ole Miss & Mississippi State ADs Bjork & Cohen will head to Birmingham to meet with SEC Commish Sankey to discuss the post-game activities from last week's FB matchup. From Sankey, "These incidents have become too common in this series. I will require both athletics directors to meet with me at the SEC Office in the off-season to review past issues and develop a plan for the purpose of creating a healthier environment for this annual game." (link); Texas A&M gets a $50K slap for its fans rushing the field after the Aggies 7OT win over LSU. The league also says it "remains in contact" with both schools on the post-game physical altercations. A&M HC Fisher says "the matter has been addressed internally." (link - SEC news, link - A&M statement, link - more video of the incidents)
With North Carolina closing in on the re-hire of former Tar Heels & Texas FB HC Brown, as well as Kansas going with former LSU/Oklahoma State HC Miles, USA Today's Wolken believes the trend of older hires indicates "athletics directors know that no matter how much money they raise or how many titles their hires win in women’s soccer, their tenures will be defined by whether they can pick a winning football coach. So perhaps the natural outgrowth of that pressure is an affinity for older, more mature coaches who, if nothing else, don’t have to do a lot of learning on the job." Put another way by Wolken, "The lack of long-term vision, however, and the unwillingness to have a real conviction about anyone in the next generation of coaches seem like little more than a punt on fourth-and-two from the opponent's 35-yard line." (link)
Pepperdine student-athletes returned to class on campus yesterday after 15 days away due to the damage & danger from the Woolsey Fire. MBB's home win over Idaho State last night was the first major event for the campus community in the same space that was used for a shelter as the fire grew closer to the university. Waves HC Romar slept in his car the first night his neighborhood was evacuated, "It wasn’t a whole lot different for me than waiting between recruiting visits when you’ve got a few hours to kill. We just assumed our house was gone." Romar's team was evacuated from campus quickly, some with scarcely more than the clothes on their backs, leading to the need for some essentials shopping once the squad arrived in the Bahamas for the Bahamas Showcase. Romar: "We were in the foxhole together. We’re definitely more bonded now than we were before. I’ll take the tradeoff, given the circumstances." More. (link)
The man who posted a racially-charged Facebook message targeting Florida State FB HC Taggart was fired from his job at Hilton Grand Vacations. Company spokeswoman George: "Our concern regarding this situation has been a top priority. The person responsible for posting this information has been terminated. His behavior was in violation of multiple company policies and the furthest example from being a reflection of our company’s values." (link)
Latest SBJ: College beat headliner Smith reviews Learfield's success with Campus+ as campus-wide deals take time & effort for the right alignment, but can pay off quite handsomely. At Louisville, agreements were recently squared away with PNC Bank & Canon to the tune of "mid-seven figures annually over 13 years" for each. Campus+'s Fulp: "It is disruptive. It is a new way of doing business. Many universities are defined by silos, and in some cases they’re fortified castles. This requires administrators to work together and have a much better value proposition." Canon's Shaw: "I really think this is how universities are going to do business now. They’re really starting to think with a more business-minded approach about ways they can leverage their partners." 10 schools have added the model: Cal State Northridge, Colorado State, Long Beach State, Louisville, Missouri, North Carolina, N.C. State, Purdue, San Jose State and Texas A&M. More. (link); A good look at big money - private equity & other investment firms - who are pouring cash into the sports space. Mentioned: Bruin Sports Capital, SoftBank, The Raine Group, Allen & Co, others. All names that should be quite familiar. (linklink) All articles are open for a full look. No password needed.
While Southern Miss AD Gilbert may soon be named as the new boss at ECU, he's still working to find Golden Eagles FB (6-5) a bowl spot, "The main attribute is that the Southern Miss brand is very strong. People across the country recognize that. We’re bowl-eligible for the fourth consecutive season and in 22 of the last 25 years. Those are all very positive things that I am on the phone communicating to the appropriate people." (link); South Carolina leaders aren't quite sure what to expect from an attendance standpoint for this Saturday's freshly scheduled kick with Akron. Gamecocks Senior Assoc. AD for Marketing & Branding/CMO Nichols says 30K tix have already been sold, excited for some fans who may not regularly have access to Williams-Brice Stadium to get to attend a game. (link); Marshall AD Hamrick says the Thundering Herd would have forfeited a $1.4M insurance payment if it had a chance to play a 12th FB game, but didn't. MU will collect that amount, minus travel expenses, as well as $300K more for its tilt at Virginia Tech on Saturday. (link)

Illinois AD Whitman offers more context on his decision to give FB HC Smith a two-year extension, "Look, I get it. I understand the record we’ve put on the field the last three years. I understand the frustration. We share in that frustration. We expect to play better. Generally, I think you do extensions for one of two reasons. One, as a reward for things that have happened in the past, or the second is to put a team in position to be successful in the future. […] My job is to evaluate that progress we’re making and the process that we put in place to build a winner. I see those things happening. I’m out in practice. I’m in the planes and in the meetings. I’m around our coaching staff. I’m around our players. I see how they’re responding to each other. I see the work that they’re doing." More. (link)
Kansas State boss Taylor comments on the future of longtime Wildcats HC Snyder, "We chatted a little bit this morning and we just kind of laid out some timeline and figured out what our next steps are going to be. I think we’ll get some things settled this week. He’s got some things he wants to work through and I think he deserves that opportunity. And I’m going to be out of town tomorrow and he’ll be out of town tomorrow and we’ll probably get together later this week and kind of talk through the season and talk about things we need to do to get better and figure out what the next steps are. […] Coach gets a lot of latitude based on what he’s done for our program, and as much as he’s done, not only for football, but for this institution and really for the state of Kansas in a lot of ways. I think some people have a tendency to lose sight of that pretty quickly and that’s disappointing in some ways." (link)
UTSA AD Campos releases a statement on the continued leadership of FB HC Wilson after a 3-9 campaign for the Roadrunners, which includes, "There is a lot that goes into building a championship program, and we measure it not only by wins and losses, but by the integrity, character and discipline of the program as a whole. We are still a young program and sustained success doesn't happen overnight. Regardless, my expectation is to compete for conference championships and represent UTSA at bowl games." (link); As for Colorado State AD Parker & the return of HC Bobo, "We all agree the 2018 campaign's outcome was not acceptable. Our mission to excel was not achieved by the on-field results. The shortfalls will be remedied to ensure future performance demonstrates excellence. Winning is important, it is our expectation and we will do it the right way, with integrity. I am confident in the leadership of our football program." (link)
More on the Mack Brown move at North Carolina with an announcement possible as soon as today. The Tar Heels will be on the hook for $3M+ per year for former HC Fedora. Brown was earning a base of around $5M went he last roamed the sidelines for Texas in 2013. (link); Western Kentucky AD Stewart works quickly, will hire Tennessee OC Helton as the new skipper of the Hilltoppers program. No word on contract terms yet. (link)
More Personnel: Former Oklahoma FB HC Stoops denies the rumors that Auburn representatives have reached out to him. Yes, really. (link); Sacramento State AD Orr will look for a new FB HC. (link); Clemson FB HC Swinney's thoughts for fans complaining about Saturday's win over South Carolina: "I just want to win by one more point. If that ever gets to where that’s not enough, then it’s time for me to move on somewhere else. I ain’t never going to apologize for a 21-point win over a state rival, ever. You people who suggest that it felt like a loss, y’all need to check yourself, too. I’ve been here 16 years. For all those people out there that want to complain about five wins in a row, winning by three touchdowns, man, that’s shameful. That’s a lack of respect for our program and a lack of respect for the effort that these players and coaches put in. I hope you write that." (link); Texas FB HC Herman calls former Kansas boss Beaty a "friend of mine" and that Beaty never actually made it to Austin to help Herman and his staff prepare for Oklahoma because of the blizzard that hit in Kansas. (link); ESPN is letting sports business reporter Rovell out of his contract early to join The Action Network, an upstart gambling platform. His contract was set to expire this summer.(link)
Behind the Law360 paywall, but sounds like we'll learn more about it soon, "NCAA Slammed With New Concussion Lawsuit: The National Collegiate Athletic Association and its Missouri Valley Conference have been hit with a proposed class action in Indiana federal court claiming the organizations 'sacrificed player safety in favor of...'" (link)
AthleticDirectorU launches a new podcast, appropriately branded, "The AthleticDirectorU Podcast," that will feature regularly-updated discussions with executives from around college athletics on key contemporaneous issues and how they attack the challenge of leadership. The content will also include audio versions of ADU's deep library of video conversations. Leading off the series is Cleveland State AD Thomas on how his past leadership assignments are contributing to his strategy with the Vikings. Of note, "No matter the size of institution or amount of resources, you have the same expectations at the end of the day, whether it’s competitively, academically, or the overall experience for your student-athletes. You have to meet those expectations regardless of resources you have to achieve them. […] There isn’t a situation where you can raise a lot of money if you aren’t aligned with university advancement office on campus. […] We as a staff are okay with doing the heavy lifting and being the pace car on taking the school to new heights in terms of publicity, specifically through athletics." More. (link)
LEAD1 releases a new video recapping its annual meeting (it certainly doubles as a recruiting piece, too). Colorado AD George: "We want as many of our members here as possible so we can really have some serious discussions about the issues that are impacting the college athlete." Pitt AD Lyke: "This is a place where we can create initiatives and opportunities for us to have a voice as Directors of Athletics." UNLV's Reed-Francois: "Come. The opportunity to spend time with our colleagues and learn from some of the world's best is really invaluable."  (link)
Louisiana AD Maggard says he & his team are reviewing new models to determine the best way forward for renovations to Cajun Field. When Maggard arrived in Lafayette, plans called for a seating expansion, an option Maggard never endorsed given attendance trends around the nation. Maggard: "At the end of the day you get one chance to do this right. So, it has taken a lot of time. It’s taken more time than I thought it would. But I also realize that in order to make the best decision, to do the right thing, you just need to work through a lot of details and have a lot of conversations to determine how you can accomplish the best solution for us today." (link)
UAB announces a new multi-year membership campaign. 'IGNITE' is an initiative to increase the Blazer Boosters membership numbers, which totaled 1,862 at the end of the 2017 giving year. AD Ingram: "We want to be the best at everything that we do. We have three Core Values in UAB Athletics. We want to Compete for Championships, Graduate with Honors, and Make a Difference. To accomplish these goals, we must also win off the field by properly supporting our coaches and student-athletes." Membership starts at $50/year. UAB will track the momentum of the campaign by surpassing peer school's numbers with UTSA's 1,965 and Charlotte's 2,000 donor base numbers as the first two goals. (link)
Inside Higher Ed's Kreighbaum asks what the newly proposed Title IX plan "would mean for misconduct off campus." Specific language, "In determining whether a sexual harassment incident occurred within a recipient’s program or activity, courts have examined factors such as whether the conduct occurred in a location or in a context where the recipient owned the premises; exercised oversight, supervision, or discipline; or funded, sponsored, promoted, or endorsed the event or circumstance." Kreighbaum: "Higher ed institutions will also be seeking clarification on what constitutes a campus 'program or activity.' Would activities like study abroad programs or professional internship programs affiliated with colleges, for example, fall under that category?" (link)
Also Noticed: Utah AD Harlan on the future of the Utah vs. BYU FB game: "It is pretty much out there for many, many years to come and with that kind of energy ... I don’t know why you wouldn’t continue to play that game." (link); Four North Carolina and three NC State FB student-athletes have been suspended and publicly reprimanded by the ACC for their part in the post-game scuffle between the two teams on Saturday. Those with eligibility remaining will be suspended for one half of the next game, but it is up to the respective school to decide which half. (link); ABC will present all three days of the 2019 NFL Draft for the first time, including two nights of primetime coverage. (link); The Law360 paywall is still alive and well, but here is this: "The Hawaii Supreme Court has revived an unfair competition suit brought by a bowl game sponsor against the National Collegiate Athletic Association, ruling it had presented enough evidence to move forward... " (link); The University of Minnesota police department has applied for a search warrant seeking to obtain info contained in the school's EOAA office investigation of sexual assault allegations against former Gopher MBB student-athlete Lynch. You'll recall that office recommended Lynch be expelled for violating the school's sexual misconduct policy and he accepted their recommendation instead of appearing at appeal hearings. The search warrant application indicates there may be information in that investigation relevant to the ongoing criminal one. (link); Mount St. Mary's gets "conditional approval" to sell beer and wine at Knott Athletic Recreation Convocation Complex and the Waldron Family Stadium. (link); The Minnesota Vikings and 3M teamed up to give every fan a purple film, which, when held in front of the fan's cell phone flash light emitted a purple light. Pretty cool all-purple glow inside the stadium. (link); The Cornell athletics department has launched a crowdfunding campaign to create a digital library to catalog and easily search for information about former student-athletes. Assoc. Dir. of Athletic Communications Hartigan's office currently holds scrapbooks dating back to 1887, with info on every varsity athlete who has ever lettered for the Big Red. (link)
