November 2018 Newsletter

Well this dramatic drop in temperature seems to have made a vast difference to the amount of birds on my feeders. Shed loads of Tits spending quite a time on both the hearts and the suet feeders. I have had the Robins and Wrens scoffing the dried meal worms while up to three Great spotted woodpeckers on the peanuts and pellets.
Life seems to be pretty hectic at this time what with  cleaning all the feeders and the bird baths, sweeping up all the fallen leaves and tidying up my garden hide in preparation for the many winter hours I will have to spend in there while the lovely Fennella plies me with hot drinks and toasted sandwiches.

As with most retail establishments - Feathers (much like Fortnum & Masons, Harrods and Poundshops) are getting stocked up for what we all hope will be a busy Christmas period. We have lots of little goodies in but If you want to buy your loved ones a special Chrissie present this year take a peek at our *What's On* advert below. You will see we are doing a special Christmas deal on Swarovski binoculars and scopes, a wonderful present to spoil your husband, wife, mummy or daddy or even your local birdy-shop assistant.
My trip to Madagascar with Fennella was nothing less than fantastic, some wonderful wildlife and many beautiful birds. It is a fact that when you take this kind of holiday you are mostly taken to protected rainforests or areas that are difficult or impossible to de-forest, sadly there is still a fair amount of that going on. Like most countries including our own there is lots of stuff going on that is detrimental to the well-being of the planet, a topic for another day. You can find some of my Madagascar photos by clicking on the picture...
I wish everybody a very happy Christmas and sincerely hope that 2019 will be a peaceful and prosperous year for us all.

With Rye Harbour on my doorstep, I've spent many hours out on the reserve. From the 8 months I've been there, it would be hard to pick a favourite moment. I've watched barn owls hunting at sunset, fox cubs playing by their den, cuckoos on the beach reserve searching for food and earlier this month a very inquisitive stoat coming to within a few metres of me. This latest experience was certainly the most surprising, as it's far from a stoat's usual behaviour to see someone and run towards them rather than the other way. You can see my photos and read about it on our blog by clicking on the picture below.
We've seen a good selection of birds at Feathers this month, but none more exciting than a female black redstart which arrived yesterday. Black redstarts breed in very small numbers in Britain but migrants arrive in the country from mainland Europe to spend the winter. Although it's not a new species for us, we haven't had one here for a few years. Hopefully she might hang around for a little while.
