Are you a “reader or a listener?” In other words, do you enjoy reading God’s Word or listening to God’s Word being read using your Bible App? I enjoy both and several days ago I was reading the events in Acts 11 about the establishment of the new church in Antioch, Greece. Acts 11:21 says “A great number of people believed and turned to the Lord.”
Then, in Acts 11:26 it says the believers were given a new name. “The disciples were first called Christians at Antioch.”
And a while later, in Acts 26 Paul was brought before King Agrippa and all the high-ranking officers and leading men of the city of Caesarea. Caesarea became the capital of the Roman province of Judea. The ancient ruins are located in Israel near the present city of Haifa. The city of Caesarea became a leading city for the growth of believers in Christ.
Paul took advantage to share his testimony of conversion to Christ before King Agrippa and the other officials and in response Acts 26:28 King Agrippa said to Paul, “Do you think that in such a short time you can persuade me to be a Christian?”
This is the second time believers are called “Christian” by those who do not believe. Why? Because, in those early days the word “Christian” described the lifestyle of the followers of Christ.
But today, it seems to me that the term “Christian” has just become a definition of a religion and not a lifestyle. You see, according to Acts chapters 11 and 26 the name “Christian” was given as a description of the daily life of a man or woman. In Acts 11:26, notice the word “called” and it means they were “identified clearly, without a doubt, with Jesus Christ.”
In the early language of the New Testament it means if you are “called” a Christian you are “identified with something without a mistake.” In other words, the lifestyle of the people who were “called Christian” was so different from others because they were connected to Christ.
For example, if you attend a Tokyo Giants baseball game there is no mistake about those who are called Giant baseball fans. They are clearly identified by their actions seen by banners, flags, wearing T-shirts, and loud and constant cheering.
Is the word “Christian” a description of the activities of your life or is the word “Christian” just a definition of your religious connection?
I suggest that you and I need a NEW NAME, so we are identified by our lifestyle and not just by our religion.
In Christ,
DENNIS FOLDS
