VIOLENCE IN HEKPOORT

We have been advised that the situation in Hekpoort is extremely volatile and dangerous. Things started going downhill last week and flared up really badly over the past three days, with roads shut, people shot at, cars pelted with rocks etc. This includes the turnoff along the R96 that goes past Bekker School to Lovers Rock. (see attached picture). They managed to clear the roads with bulldozers late yesterday, but there are rumours that things are going to flare up on Saturday again.

I would suggest that we alert our members of this. Members should thus avoid Hekpoort when going to Castle Gorge or Tonquani South or consider alternative routes. If heading out to Mhalabatini (or nearby kloofs), it may be best to take the more tedious route through the town of Magaliesburg.  Castle Gorge should be approached from the Harties side. For Castle Gorge, I would even suggest trying to take one of the earlier turn-offs onto the R401 dirt road after passing van Gaalen's. (maps.google.com is your friend)
