Take a moment to revisit our journey and photos here.
A New Generation

Our Kusi Kawsay educational, cultural and agricultural projects are part of a great movement of reconnecting and reciprocating in a selfless and loving way.  We want to see our children live a happy life and respect the earth and all of life.

What began as a dream, a great hope and need, has grown into a love labor of three beautiful projects.  Our organic farm focuses on native seed saving and growing healthy nutritious food.  Our cultural project celebrates and honors Andean culture, tradition and wisdom.  Our Kusi Kawsay school began with just 20 students and has now become a welcoming home to 100 students.  They receive quality education rooted in Andean culture merged with elements of Waldorf pedagodgy.  We've seen our students graduate and venture out into the world, equipped with values and a strong cultural identity.

We have confronted numerous challenges but chose reconciliation and healing through education, compassion, knowledge and, ancestral wisdom.  Our
projects are inspired through our dedication of raising a generation of indigenous children and youth to practice the Andean beliefs that are healing historic trauma and creating a path to a livable, happy and liberated future.

One of the most profound principles in the Andean belief is the philosophy of Ayni, which in our native tongue of Quechua means reciprocity. Giving and receiving does not mean I will give you something therefor you owe me and should give something back to me.  No.  It is the consciousness that life is a gift, that the water we drink, the food we harvest and share, the air we breathe, the sun that gives us life, the stars, mountains, rivers and more – have all been given to us and receiving these, means that it is our responsibility to give.  Giving comes in so many ways.  In Andean belief, it is not that when someone is in need of clothes, we clothe them but rather that we clothe them in the best of what we have.  Ayni is symbolically represented by two hands crossing over each other with one palm facing up (receiving) and one palm facing down (giving).  It can be explained through breathing.  How long can you survive by just inhaling – it is not possible.  How long can you survive by exhaling – it is also not possible.  That is the flow of life, that is Ayni – inhaling, exhaling – expanding, extracting – giving, receiving.

All the momentous work done by the Kusi Kawsay Association is rooted in Ayni.  The children, youth and community learn how to be an integral and necessary part of a community, they learn about the importance of gratitude.  Everything is interconnected.  Without Pachamama (Mother Earth) we could not live and without each other, we could not live either.  The Andean belief teaches that reciprocity is a balance, a responsibility and conscious way of life.

In practice, this is visible through our three projects.  The seeds we planted more than 20 years ago when we dedicated our lives to documenting the songs of our ancestors, the dances of our elders, the traditional clothing, weaving techniques and their meanings as well as the Andean indigenous music.

Our journey has been a long and winding road.  Each day, we have the honor of tending to 100 children and to our youth, proudly teaching them not only academic classes but also about their roots, culture and tradition.  Thanks to all the support from near and far, we are able to continue the wonderful work that we do.  We are so grateful.

What are these funds going towards?

The Giving Tuesday funds raise will go directly towards our Ayni Scholarship Fund to ensure the continuation of our work and impact in the lives of children and youth.  Read full details about our scholarship here.
