Supporting The Growth Of Sustainable Palm Oil
Newsletter | Q4 2018

Dear Friends and Supporters,

2018 is about to close and what a year! Find out what we have been working on from the ground up; from farm-level interventions to fostering critical market links for our WAGS producers.
HIGHLIGHTS

The Environmental Benefits of Smallholders Farming Sustainably
WAGS on the ground - our approach towards building resilience through lower cost production, finding opportunities for diversification or simply gaining better value for their produce.

Support for Independent Producers

We bring local technical support to independent producers to do better. The programme is adapted for small producers - from smallholders to SMEs.

Learn more about Wild Asia Group Scheme (WAGS).

What's New:
  • WAGS  is a standalone programme to support small producers to meet legal requirements, improve production practices, and continually improve.

  • WAGS is working to enable both RSPO and MSPO Certification for all its Group Certificates by 2019. Thus, our growers meet the national policy for certification, but goes a step further, to future-proof their businesses and maintain market access in the long term. Read more here

  • Today, WAGS supports independent producers, across 3 states in Malaysia. About 80% of this produce is flowing through one or more RSPO Palm Oil Mills.

  • Support our work by buying WAGS Credits on RSPO Palm Trace or talk to us about focusing your sourcing from RSPO MB Mills that are working to support our small producers on the ground.

Building Leadership & Local Capacity

We design and innovate new ways to deliver technical knowledge to practitioners on the ground.

What's New:
  • Wild Asia Academy delivers professional courses for RSPO auditors and companies, keen to learn more about Global Standards and its implementation.

  • In 2018, we began to shift to small producers on the ground, and began to design a course that could inspire owners of SMEs to do better. We were excited to be able to launch this unique course with the Sabah-based East Malaysia Planters Association (EMPA) early this year. The course is designed to prepare growers to meet the National MSPO standard. Learn more here

  • Also this year, we took a different approach with "training smallholders" and began to test out new workshops and demonstrations designed to teach smallholders about low cost options and the importance of "living soils" as the base of sustainable agriculture. Watch this space as the programme unfolds, one grower at a time!

Wild Asia Study Tours have been one way to stimulate conversations, bring the realities on the ground to the forefront, and get buyers of palm oil a little closer to the action on the ground. Of course, we leave as friends!

Linking to
Global Markets

We create partnerships to link sustainable producers to global markets.

Learn more about how you can support sustainable palm oil production, download our WAGS brochure here.

  • With a physical presence now in Japan, Wild Asia was invited to speak at the Japanese Sustainable Palm Oil Conference (2018), which was a major milestone for Japanese companies keen to support sustainable palm oil.

  • In the EU, together with WWF Germany, we began work with the German alliance for sustainable palm oil or FONAP. This included a review of market initiatives and will end with a physical workshop in January 2019. If you would like to participate in our questionnaire on the Malaysian perception of the FONAP criteria on Malaysian palm oil, please click here

  • We continue to grow the availability of RSPO Palm Oil Credits and these credits provide direct incentives to sustainable palm oil producers. Many of our trades were off-market deals where we are able to bring better value to the producers. To learn more, visit the RSPO.
RSPO Credits are shared with our WAGS Growers as annual bonuses. One simple, and direct, way to support producers on the the ground.

Challenges to Malaysian Palm Oil
You are invited to share your views. Online via a questionnaire or come in person on the 22nd January 2019 in Perak. The results will provide an informed and balanced perspective to the members of FONAP. The Forum for Sustainable Palm Oil (Forum nachhaltiges Palmöl - FONAP)  is an alliance of companies, non-governmental organisations, associations and the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL). Share your views here.
"Zero Waste" Community Initiative
Wild Asia kicked off its first community recycling programme in Perak, as part of an overall zero waste initiative. The programme is powered by iCycle to allow rewards for recyclers. We hope to provide a solution to the plastic and hazard waste issue commonly found in rural communities.
Encouraging Smallholders and Sustainable Farms - Edge Malaysia
Learn more about WAGS and how we work in Perak. Insights from our team and challenges from the ground. This is a very good feature story by Elaine Boey from the Edge. Read the Article.
The Palm Oil Effect - Vogue
I traveled 9,500 miles from Brooklyn to meet Pallai and Sarigoh, as they are participants in a new initiative aimed at helping independent farmers improve their growing practices to earn environmental certification—and the premiums such accreditation commands from big companies looking to clean up their operations. Read the Article.
Living Soils @ WAGS
Wild Asia believes that low cost production, or improving overall net profit per area, should be the goal for our producers. We now recognise that a focus on our soils, and healing its micro-biodiversity, unlocks many of the barriers to sustainable production. Follow us as we begin to work with our producers, one farm at a time ...
Wild Asia is supported by Global, National and Local partners, all interconnected, and share a common aim to support small producers and businesses that are inclusive, transparent and working towards sustainability goals.
