USA Today's Wolken wonders if the SEC will consider moving the Egg Bowl rivalry between Ole Miss & Mississippi State to earlier in the season after Thursday night's developments. Former CBS Sports headliner Solomon on how to turn down the heat, "It requires leadership. Ole Miss-Mississippi St could learn a lot from Clemson-SC after their worse 2004 brawl. I'm not saying bowl bans here, but that woke people up. It was an offseason of introspection led by both schools' ADs. At 2005 game, there was a pregame handshake." (linklink)
The San Francisco Chronicle profiles five women in senior leadership positions with the College Football Playoff: COO Williams, Director of Events and Hospitality Doughty, Director of Stadium and Game Ops Epley, Senior Director of Ops and Logistics Brock and Senior Director of External Relations and Branding Lehe. Doughty: "People are still kind of surprised. They’ll walk into the room and say, 'Oh, it’s all women.' Up to the COO and down to the interns, it’s one of the more diverse places I’ve worked. ... If you look around at the landscape of college football, I think we need more women in leadership positions." In a typically male-dominated sport, Williams commends Executive Director Hancock for his willingness to look beyond gender and race to "get the right people in the right positions." More. (link)
The last of five entries from the Las Vegas Review-Journal on the state of affairs for UNLV covers the challenge for the Rebels of earning share of mind & wallet in a growing market with professional sports options. Cincinnati AD Bohn's career has been marked by stops (Colorado, San Diego State) where he & his team have had to be strategic, still points to success in FB as the most important goal "You start looking at the TV rights, Mountain West, American, Pac-12 you name it. It’s driven by football." Bohn believes putting together an attractive FB schedule is also part of the mix, "You’ve got to play games of relevance whether your team is good or not." Houston AD Pezman chimes in, "We’ve had plain speak with our coaching staff. They understand the economic importance (of football). When we went to the Peach Bowl, it helped everybody. And when you don’t, and you don’t have a winning season, it causes everybody to tighten their belts." Former UNLV AD Rothermel on his advice to current Rebs boss Reed-Francois, "Retire." (link)
Central Michigan AD Alford will hire a new FB HC as outgoing program leader Bonamego will receive a $1.125M buyout. USA Today's Berkowitz indicates Bonamego's contract "is silent on him having any duty to mitigate." Both Oklahoma's Riley & Washington's Peterson earned $50K bonuses for their victories last night & subsequent access to league championship games. Iowa's Ferentz was the biggest winner of the day with a $500K stack for the Hawkeyes' eight triumph of the season. Others bonuses: Buffalo's Leipold with $15K, Toledo's Candle gets $10K, Memphis' Norvell $50K, Eastern Michigan's Creighton $10K, Missouri's Odom $25K, Cincinnati's Fickell $30K. (link)

In another defeat for OTT, Turner's B/R Live had all sorts of problems streaming the Tiger Woods-Phil Mickelson head-to-head event yesterday from Vegas. Eventually viewing was opened up for free after the technical difficulties. (link); ESPN's Rovell: "The added amount of viewers, some of whom found out about the free stream on social media, did not seem to impact the quality of the stream itself. It is not known if Turner will credit those who paid, though a case could be made that those who paid did in fact get the product." (link)

North Carolina AD Cunningham on why the Tar Heels didn't play a 12th FB game after the UCF cancellation, "Our insurance policy pays us a certain amount of money, and that policy could be reduced by money you could generate through the game if you played a 12th game. As we analyzed it, between [providing] a guarantee for a visiting team and the number of tickets we thought we could sell, it actually would have been more expensive to play the game. [...] Football is a long season. You practice and practice and practice, and you get to play 11 or 12 times. It’s unfortunate because everybody likes the game better than practice. But I think everyone is ready for this Saturday to be the last game of the season." (link)
Fresno State Senior Assoc. AD for Sport Services/SWA Coll is ready to lead this weekend's Women's Volleyball NCAA Tournament selection process. Notably: "The tool kit is there, but it’s going to be tough, as it is every year. The comparisons are difficult and it comes down to the tiniest things. […] Once we’re in the room we deal with the data we have there. Once we’ve done the rankings and seeding and have all 64 teams in there, we will look at other rankings to see how far off are these and why. What makes that be different, because it makes you wonder. Is there a reason there is such a huge discrepancy in their RPI number versus another ranking." (link)
"That’s a hard one for me. It’s about the kids, and I want to still make it about the kids." That's Maryland Interim FB HC Canada when asked why he should be the permanent replacement in College Park. More, as WaPo's Svrluga advocates for Canada getting the job, "I think we’ve learned how important it is to make sure you understand how everybody feels. […] I don’t think there’s ever been a time that that’s been more evident than this season at Maryland, because there’s been so many different emotions, so many different feelings, people who felt very strongly about different things that were going on. But yet, when you look at the product on the field, those guys have all played very hard together." (link)
Stadium's Goodman continues his 'Conference Chain of Command' series with the CAA as coaches from the league vote on which MBB HC position is best based on nine different criteria. Results: Charleston, UNC Wilmington, Hofstra, Northeastern, James Madison, Drexel, Towson (tie), Delaware (tie), William & Mary. (link)
Rutgers' move to the Big Ten continues to be criticized as the New York Times' Armstrong takes another look. Longtime RU economics professor Killingsworth has been outspoken on the financial positioning of the Scarlet Knights, "After the Michigan game, the Michigan coach, Jim Harbaugh, mistakenly referred to Chris Ash as Rob in his news conference. That’s actually a good name for the whole sports program. It’s robbing the students and academics of resources." FB HC Ash on his program's outlook, "There are so many improvements on the inside that people don’t see day to day. I am very excited about our future, the culture that we’ve established, the character of the individuals that we have in this program, the chemistry that we have in this program, the true brotherhood that we have here." (link)
Beer at ballgames at Buffalo has a nice ring to it & the Bulls will do just that with MBB, WBB & FB in a pilot program. UB AD Alnutt: "Is this a windfall for athletics? Not necessarily. It helps enhance the revenue, but the main thing is being able to give people that option. If they want to enjoy and partake in this, they have the opportunity to do this. […] A lot of this was, let’s follow suit with our peers, and then see if there’s any concerns they might have. That process started before I got here, under Allen (Greene, former UB athletic director) leadership, and the feedback was positive." (link)
Between 2015 and the Fall of 2018, the Texas athletic department reported more than double the number of NCAA secondary violations than any in-state rival. Texas (148), Texas A&M (73), Houston (46), Texas Tech (43), Texas State (32), UTSA (31), and North Texas (6) combined for a 54.1 average, with the most violations coming from football (118), women's basketball (42), track & field (42), men's basketball (30) and volleyball (22). For context, Power 5 schools average 17 violations per year... Texas averages 37. NCAA Directpr of Enforcement Strobel: "What raises a red flag to us is when an institution doesn’t report any, or very few violations. That’s more of a red flag, more than a lot of violations." (link)
Also Noticed: The Washington band opted to return to Seattle instead of continuing on to Pullman for last night's Apple Cup. Two students remain under medical care with non life-threatening injuries after one of the six buses carrying the band flipped over on an icy highway Thursday night. Washington State kept the reserved seats for the Huskies band roped off in the stands "in honor of our friends from the Westside." (link); Nicholls State is on pace to match last season's 9,612 announced attendance for the first round playoff game, but still has a goal of reaching a 10,500 sellout. (link); The CFP announces the scheduled artists for AT&T Playoff Playlist Live! with performances over three days by Alessia Cara & Brynn Elliott, Logic & Leon Bridges & Jay Rock, and OneRepublic & Ellie Goulding. (link); Houston brought its heated benches to Memphis for yesterday's FB game. (Heated benches are a thing??) (link)
