'Making Jesus known in a modern, relevant, and unstuffy way'
Hello Everyone…
I am starting to write this on my hotel balcony, overlooking the Sea of Galilee on my final day of a 7-day pilgrimage to the Holy Land.
"Amazing" seems so inadequate a word to describe my experience of walking in Jesus' footsteps, renewing baptismal vows by the River Jordan - watching people being fully immersed (as they did in Jesus' time), walking the Via Dolorosa carrying a large wooden cross (it took four of us!). With Advent Sunday this Sunday, it was so relevant to attend a service in the church dedicated to the Annunciation (when the Angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, telling her she would bare God's child).
I'm sure over the next months I will bore you with all my tales of the Holy Land! But I would like to relate something our bus driver said. We were just stepping into the boat to cross the Sea of Galilee when a storm hit. The waves grew in intensity and the boat started rolling. It was spooky as we had just started reading the bible passage of this happening to the disciples. Jesus was asleep in the boat and they had to wake Him up and He calmed the storm. Our driver said, "How often are we going along nicely in our lives and suddenly we hit a rocky patch - out of the blue problems arise to rock our boat. It's quite simple, just wake Jesus up!"

I hope you have all remembered that this Sunday, as well as it being Christingle (when children will be making their own Christingles), we are also supporting one of our congregation, Vicky Johnson, who is having her hair shaved off this Friday, in aid of a cancer charity. After talking about unity and helping people on their journey at the last Family Service, it seemed appropriate for us as a church to support Vicky. I know I wouldn't be as brave as to have my head shaved, but am supporting her by dyeing my hair pink, so I am asking you all to attend the service on Sunday with coloured hair! Either dyed, sprayed or a wear a wig.

Please bring money for a collection which will be given to Vicky's charity. Thank you everyone in advance.

Local Minister

A CHRISTMAS MESSAGE
Mary, did you know that your baby boy would one day walk on water? Mary, did you know that your baby boy would save our sons and daughters? Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new? This child that you've delivered, will soon deliver you. Mary, did you know that your baby boy will give sight to a blind man? Mary, did you know that your baby boy will calm the storm with his hand? Did you know that your baby boy has walked where angels trod? When you kiss your little baby, you kiss the face of God. Mary, did you know? Mary, did you know? Mary, did you know?.. Mary, did you know? Mary, did you know? Mary, did you know?.. The blind will see, the deaf will hear, the dead will live again. The lame will leap, the dumb will speak, the praises of the lamb! Mary, did you know that your baby boy is Lord of all creation? Mary, did you know that your baby boy would one day rule the nations? Did you know that your baby boy is heaven's perfect Lamb? That sleeping child you're holding is the great I am. Mary, did you know? Mary, did you know? Mary, did you know?.. Mary, did you know?

*Don't Forget* - Bring a tin to the family service!

We hope that you are in a position to put some yummy food on your table this Christmas, but many people in Lincoln are unable to do that.
Lincoln community larder logoSo we invite you to grab a tin from your kitchen cupboard, bring it to the family service, and then place it into the ('BAT BOX') at the back of church. We call it the Bring a Tin ('BAT') initiative.
We send the food to The Lincoln Community Larder whose aim is to provide basic food for people in crisis. They do this by issuing Larder Vouchers to a variety of agencies in the area who then refer people to them who are in need of assistance in the form of food. The larder provide 3 days worth of food for each person included on the voucher.
Lincoln Larder give advice about the best tins required by them here.

Look who's moved the font!
This is Mike and Glen who are Lincoln Cathedral stonemasons. They spent a day last weekend moving the font from its location in the entrance to the bell tower to its new home adjacent to one of the pillars in the nave. Access to the bell tower floor area was severely restricted by the position of the font. Mike said 'moving the font to its proposed location would be really beneficial due to the presence of continuous damp in its current location which has started to delaminate the base and the plinth'.
Moving the font will also free up the bell tower floor area, and assist access to the bell tower, which is currently used for storage. The short term plan is to use the bell tower floor area more practically and flexibly. Firstly to locate a portable digital mixing desk  which is part of a new digital audio system incorporating a hearing loop, part-funded by the Bishop’s Transformation Fund, and secondly a temporary moveable, servery from which refreshments can be served, thus freeing up more space for seating in the current refreshment area.
A longer term plan would be to use the bell tower floor area for a disabled toilet facility. The relocation of the font will help maintain our current Church growth rate and our ‘fresh expression of church’ transformation.
Teaching Children about Communion
Do you remember way back in May this year we told you about a new and exciting expansion to our already popular Family Service and that we were planning to introduce a new family communion service on a regular basis.

Well thanks to the staff from 'The Reality Youth Project', and the 'Diocesan Children and Youth Mission Enablers' this is now a reality.

We recognise that Sunday has now become a busy time for families with lots of sports and other activities going on especially during a Sunday morning. So..... we are going to try it as a Sunday afternoon initiative starting at 4pm for an hour. The format will be  similar to our monthly family service on the first Sunday of the month, ie INFORMAL, INCLUSIVE, INTERACTIVE, FRIENDLY, FUN AND FREE!

We want children to be welcomed and valued equally, not excluded from this key element of worship. We also recognise the importance of teaching children about Christs sacrifice. For this reason, prior to the first children's communion service there will be a session to teach children the meaning of Communion at 3pm on Sunday 20th January 2019. If you are interested please come along.

Armistice Centenary

Our  special Armistice Centenary event ran during remembrance week. It was made up of three parts: The Lost Voices Concert, The Remembrance Service and a World War 1 Flying Corps Exhibition.

All parts of the special event made the Armistice Day Centenary a time to reflect and remember.

The Lost Voices Choir Concert was on 10th November and was a performance of songs from the trenches, along with readings written by soldiers during World War 1. All 100 seats allocated were taken.

Over 200 people attended the following morning's Remembrance Service which included the dedication of a commemoration rose bed planted with 6 roses, donated by David Austin Roses,  called 'Peace'. The rose bed has a plaque inscribed:

 ARMISTICE DAY 100th Anniversary 1918 - 2018
‘All gave some - Some gave all'.

Large poppies were placed on the 64 Commonwealth and German war graves by local children.

A servicing RAF officer commented "As the member of RAF Scampton to be present and having the honour of laying a wreath, I was moved by the whole service and the dedication. It truly was an honour and I feel blessed and humbled to have been there with my family".

For the rest of the week there was an exhibition of personal stories of those members of the Royal Flying Corps who served at Scampton Airfield during WW1 and who lost their lives whilst protecting the country from Zeppelin bombers. The small exhibition alongside the RAF chapel in church was free to enter and a collection box for the Armed  Forces Covenant Fund raised £20.

All of the events were accompanied by 'there but not there' silhouettes representing nine pilots who lost their lives flying from either Scampton or North Carlton airfields during World War 1.

Scampton Church / School partnership

For those of you who sent to school 'Operation Christmas Child' shoeboxes, you will be pleased to know that they were successfully collected and are on their way to someone, somewhere in the world. Sixty-four boxes were collected and we enjoyed forming a human chain through the school, each of us sending our love with each box. Click here to see them on their way!

As we approach the joyful time of Christmas, it gets busy in school - Nativity, Christmas Fair, Christmas Jumper Day, pantomime, decorations, cards... the list goes on!
New this year, our older pupils are having a 'Christmas Pilgrimage'. Taking gifts to each church as pilgrims from the past might have done, pupils will be walking to three churches in the Springline Parish and to a residential care home to sing Carols with anyone who would like to join us. Weather permitting, on 17th December, we'll be at the following locations:

9.30am - Scampton
10.30am - North Carlton
1pm - South Carlton

Throughout history, special journeys have been made by many people to places of spiritual significance, from the wise men who visited Jesus to the many Christian pilgrims who have visited our great cathedral in Lincoln. Just think of the feeling they will have had after days walking to see the great spires on top of the city as they travelled the last few miles of their journey. Just think of the people they would have met, the places they visited and the experiences they had en route. Hopefully, we'll get some of that feeling on our walk as we near each church.

Like the journeys in the Christmas Story (wise men, shepherds and Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem) there will be many special journeys this Christmas to see family and friends. The journey of our shoeboxes and our own mini Pilgrimage are the same - about spreading love, wonder and Good News.

Happy Christmas from us all at Scampton Church of England Primary School.'

RAF Stained Glass Window
To commemorate the close relationship between RAF Scampton and Scampton church over the last 100 years, and also as RAF Scampton is earmarked to be de-commisioned, we have decided to look at the feasibility of creating a partnership to create an RAF stained glass window in the church as a lasting memory. A number of squadrons have flown from the base, but generally they have used three aircraft: Avro Lancaster, Avro Vulcan and Hawk Trainer. At this early stage those aircraft could form the basis of the design, along with the RAF scampton insignia.
RAF Scampton, The Dambusters Inn and Scampton Primary School are partners with Scampton Church, and The Claire Williamson Glassworks in making this concept a reality. An invitation has also been sent to Pollyplatt Primary School.
We are particularly looking for local people who have knowledge and skills using the social media platforms of Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and Twitter. If you have this experience and are interested in becoming part of the team please contact us.
(The picture is for stained glass illustration only and not representative of the design)
Children in the churchyard
We are conscious that churchyards can sometimes be dangerous places for children to play in, especially if climbing on gravestones. Always remember that it is the responsibility of parents and carers resposibility to look after children when in the churchyard, both before and after services.
