SciTech Is on the "Grow!"

As part of Mason's Academic Master Planning process, the SciTech Campus Planning Leadership Committee is assessing how to support the projected growth in students on campus in the next 5 to 10 years. The committee is composed of senior leadership from the Provost Office; the Colleges of Science, Engineering, Education, and the Arts; Facilities Management; Residence Life; Business Services; and the Science and Technology Campus.

From Fall 2018 to Fall 2024, the FTE (Full-Time Equivalent) number of students on Mason's Science and Technology Campus is projected to grow from just under 2,000 to nearly 6,200, a 210% increase in just six years.

For example, much of this growth will come from new degree programs being introduced to the campus. Examples include:
Mechanical Engineering (BS, MS and PhD),
    Bioengineering (MS and PhD),
    Bioinformatics (MS and PSM),
    Athletic Training (MS), and
    Pre-Med (BA),
as well as more students enrolled in existing programs on campus.

Soon, students will be able to take more of their classes at the SciTech Campus. Today, on average, undergraduate students take 33% of their classes at SciTech, but this is projected to be 80% by 2024. For graduate students, the percentage is projected to rise from 50% today to more than 80% in 2024.

Progress on Multi-Use Development at the Heart of Innovation Park

Mason's leaders are working with Prince William County to update the comprehensive plan for Innovation Park. Nearly ten years ago, Cooper Carry, a firm that specializes in urban design and planning, produced the original town center concept plan (later refined by Perkins+Will). The plan serves to guide development of Innovation Park in a way that encouraged creativity, learning, and social interaction among the Mason campus, the business park, and the planned Town Center communities.

In addition, there is progress on Innovation Town Center, a multi-use development planned for 150 acres adjacent to Mason's SciTech Campus. Developer Miller & Smith expects to have rezoning and permitting approval in place by early spring 2019, which will allow the company to proceed with finalizing detailed construction documents. Installation of infrastructure should begin by the end of 2019.

Miller & Smith's plans and development strategy for Innovation Town Center reflect input from Mason, and take into account campus development plans over the next five to seven years. Innovation Town Center is currently planned to have 1,120 residential units, 200,000 square feet of retail, 200,000 square feet of office and a 125-room hotel.

Bull Run Hall to Add 100,000 sq.ft.

Mason is in the process of contracting for an A&E firm to produce the final design for the expansion of Bull Run Hall. The addition, which will serve multidisciplinary education focused on science and technology, will include over 80,000 sq.ft. of specialized instructional labs and over 10,000 sq.ft. of classrooms, with the remainder being support and work space. Another 5,000 sq.ft. of specialized instructional lab space will be added through backfill projects in vacated spaces as activities relocate into the new addition.

The Volgenau School of Engineering, the College of Science, the College of Education & Human Development (Human Movement Sciences), and the College of Visual and Performing Arts (Game Design) will fill most of the new space. The project will be designed and constructed to a LEED Silver standard, incorporating environmentally sustainable construction standards to create a healthier work environment.
