EVENT SUGGESTIONS FOR THE COMING WEEKS

Feminist Fusion: Male Artists and Movember special @RumpusCosy, Plymouth
Fri 30 Nov, 19.15-22.30

We have arrived at our last session of 2018, which is our Male Artists special. As a way of commemorating Movember we have a wonderful speaker to help us explore "Toxic Masculinity" and very interesting artists from different generations with a lot to say about patriarchy.
More on the artists here.
Feminist Fusion is a non-profit initiative in support of women's arts and for a public dialogue on feminism and social justice. It also provides space for seasonal participatory crafts and information material about related social causes.

Rehearsal for the Revolution: Newspaper Theatre @The New Nursery Theatre, Capital House, London
Sat 1 Nov, 10.30-16
"I always did a kind of theatre that is upsetting to the power when the power is not democratic"
Augusto Boal in an interview with The Guardian, 2002.
In the 1960s, when Brazil was under a military dictatorship, theatre scripts were censored. To get around this, Boal started using printed materials such as newspapers and political speeches - word for word - as scripts but subverting their content on stage to reveal what was between the lines. He set up groups who would read the newspapers and devise a new play each night.
"We had dozens of groups. This helped people to understand the news. The military did not like that, that is why they sent me to prison."
Newspaper Theatre transforms non-dramatic texts (documents, textbooks, speeches) into theatrical pieces which lay bare the mechanisms used by media to control or pacify us. What they say, and how they say it, and crucially what they leave out.
Join this friendly group to explore these fascinating techniques, applying them to current publications of your choice! More on how to get involved here.

FINALLY
All of you reading this have signed up to co-create The Alternative UK. Respect to you for knowing that an alternative is possible. We need your help and participation but know in return that not everyone has the time to do more than they are already doing. Not everyone can put the political work at the centre of their project – but they hope and wish that someone would. That someone is us. Please support our work so that it will get done – not just in a minimalist, marginalist way, but in a real and connected way that will cause lasting change. A one-off donation helps enormously. But a regular donation is a game changer.
