Northland community Meningococcal W vaccination programme

There is a community outbreak of meningococcal W disease in Northland.

Northland DHB will be undertaking a vaccination programme for children aged from 9 months to under 5 years and those aged 13 to under 20 years and who are Northland domiciled residents.

The free three-week community vaccination programme will be starting on Wednesday 5 December until Friday 21 December at selected high schools and community centres across Northland.

Children under 5 are being targeted because this is the population that is generally most affected by meningococcal disease.  As a result, vaccinating this age group will protect them from getting meningococcal disease. The vaccine cannot be given to babies under 9 months.

Please share this information with your enrolled families and whānau.

There is more information about meningococcal W disease on the Northland District Health Board website.

Regulatory Updates

Changes to fire evacuation regulations

Earlier this year, fire evacuation regulations changed. As all centre-based services must have a fire evacuation scheme approved by Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ), you need to be aware of these changes.

The key change is that you no longer need to give FENZ prior notice of a trial evacuation as part of maintaining your fire evacuation scheme. You need to notify them within 10 days of completing it. There are also extra reporting requirements.

We’ll update relevant licensing criteria guidance in line with the changed regulations. FENZ are developing guidance for early learning services and we’ll keep you posted as this becomes available.

Read more on the Fire and Emergency NZ website.
