Education Day
Leadership Rochester’s 2019 Education Day was held at the Rochester City School District Montessori School in December. Earlier this summer, New York State Department of Education appointed Distinguished Educator, Dr Aquino, to review the Rochester City School District. In January, Dr Aquino spent the morning with LR2019 leaders discussing the findings of his report. The closed session gave our leaders direct access to ask questions about the direction of the district and its leadership.

Class members also heard about ways the community is working to strengthen local education for youth.  Panel speakers included Cecelia Golden PhD, RCSD Deputy Superintendent, Jackie Campbell, Director of ROC the Future, Shawn Nelms EdD, Superintendent of East High School (UR). Additional speakers include Rebecca Johnson PhD cofounder of the RIT Rochester City Scholars Program, Luis Perez, Greater Rochester Summer Learning Association (GRSLA), Wanda Cooper, Hillside Work Scholarship, Jennifer Muniga, Cameron Community Ministries, and Kenneth Sayers, RCSD Office of Parent Engagement.   Teen leaders from organizations such as Teen Empowerment, Hillside Work Scholarship, and Monroe County Urban Suburban Program also facilitated small group table discussions with LR class leaders. The youth shared thoughtful insights about their experiences in their schools and communities.  The kids really enjoyed the format and experience of speaking to the LR2019 class.

Leadership Rochester was proud to have Roberts Wesleyan College sponsor Education Day and discuss their commitment to the program. Roberts Wesleyan’s Strategic Leadership Program offers flexible schedules for individuals who wish to extend their education further in the areas of strategic leadership development. Joel Hoomans PhD, Director of Roberts and Wesleyan’s Strategic Leadership Program opened with discussion about the importance of the work that our LR leaders do in the community.
