DBS NEWSLETTER

30th November 2018

From Mark McVeigh, Principal

Dear DBS Parents,

We had the largest ever number of prospective parents at our Open Day this week. This is very encouraging for the growth of the school, and I know that many of you will have encouraged your friends to join the community here, so thank you. The Open Day started with wonderful music performances from Q and Pokpong. Tonkao and Yoyo, as Head Girl and Head Boy, presented brilliantly on what they think is great about DBS.

There was an excellent talk on Monday from Play Therapist and Child Psychologist, Harriet Benson. Her theme was enabling children to reach their potential, which was very well received by the parents present.

The students have had an active week. Y1 really enjoyed their ice skating trip, and they joined Y2 for their Sports Day yesterday. The Y3-Y8 Sports Day was today, and there was a terrific atmosphere. A big ‘thank you’ goes to Mr Rock for organising these events, and we are most grateful to the parents who came to support.

An expanding school needs more teachers, and I am delighted to say that we have three excellent new teachers starting in Term 2, one in the Pre-Prep, one in the Prep, and one for Swimming/PE.

Lisa joins me in sending you our very best wishes,

Mark McVeigh
Principal
Denla British School, Bangkok

Today, DBS students took part in the first stage of the school’s inaugural House debate competition. The exciting event, which was enjoyed by everyone, was organised by Mr Jordan, with the support of Mr Higgins and the House Captains. During the fun filled hour, students debated a range of thought provoking and controversial topics, such as ‘should homework be banned?’, ‘should the canteen stop serving unhealthy food?’ and should school uniform be optional?’. Working in small teams within their House’s, students collaborated to carefully craft their arguments, which they then presented to opposing teams. Using all of their persuasive powers, children expressed their opinions and aired their views in front of a judging panel of teachers, to ultimately win a place in the grand final. One team from each House was selected today, to represent their respective house in the DBS theatre next Friday, 7th December. Each of the winning teams will square off in front of the whole school and engage in a verbal battle, showcasing their speaking and listening skills,  to see who will be crowned the first ever DBS House Debating Champions. English events such as these, offer students the opportunity to apply new vocabulary acquired in the classroom, to a real life and authentic context, therefore helping them to develop the skills and qualities that we strive for at DBS- enquiry, innovation, resilience and risk taking. We wish all of the winning teams luck in their preparation for next week’s final and look forward to another successful English inspired House event.

House Sports Day for Y1-Y2 was held on 29th November. All of the DBS athletes were very enthusiastic, and showed good teamwork. Older students, who were Sports Captains, were on hand to take care of the younger students. Thank you to all the parents who came to support .

Well Done to Buckingham who won!
House Sports Day for Y3-Y8 was held this afternoon and, yet again we were treated to another fantastic display of determination and sportsmanship, as our young athletes competed for their Houses.

Well done to all the children who took part and thank you to all the parents who came to support.

Finally, a massive thank you to Mr Rock for organising such a fantastic sporting spectacle.

Well done to..

EY1 have been exploring shapes.

As part of our 'Dare To Dream' theme, Y1 visited the Sub Zero Ice-Skating rink. It was a wonderfully wintery way to enhance our learning about the story of The Snowman. In the chilly atmosphere of the ice rink, the children experienced the falling snow and the slippery swoosh of their ice skates. For most of the children, it was the first time they had been ice skating. They learned to be very resilient and quickly understood that the best thing to do if you fall down is to get back up and try again! Well done to all of Y1 for such an inspiring and enjoyable experience.

During the whole month of November, Mr Dunphy, Mr Mildner and Mr Higgins have been growing their moustaches for an international charity called Movember. The Movember charity raises money and awareness of male illnesses and men around the world grow various styles of facial beauty to promote the cause. Well done gentlemen!

On Monday, we were fortunate to have Ms Harriet Benson, child psychologist and play therapist, to talk to parents about play therapy and the impact that it can have on supporting children with behavioural issues. Ms Benson spoke about play therapy: what it is and what benefits it offers. Play therapy helps the child to learn about themselves and view their emotions and behaviours in a new light. Self-awareness, problem solving, self-regulation, motor skill mastery, storytelling, empathy, positive self-esteem, confidence and resilience are just some of the wonderful lessons that children can learn from play therapy.
