Chimes of Bedlam

Merritt-award nominated The Villain's Theatre comes to the Sawmill Playhouse! Run by Dan Bray (director of Dartmouth Players' The Woman in Black) and Colleen MacIsaac (2016 Halifax Mayor's Award winner for Emerging Theatre Artist), the Villains have been presenting spooky shows in Halifax for the past 9 years - and are excited to bring their work to Dartmouth for the first time. The Villains' shows have been called “Brilliant, hopeful...Literate, funny, and theatrically inventive.”(Elissa Barnard, NSreviews) and lauded for their "great design and a bold vision.” (Michael Lake, The Coast).

Set in an Edwardian asylum, The Changeling: Chimes of Bedlam is a dark, thrilling ride through labyrinthine halls, with original music by award-nominated composer Jenny Trites and choreography by acclaimed dancer Holly Arsenault. As the asylum's staff vie for control, the warden's daughter, Beatrice, learns the lengths to which she will go to gain her freedom.

Running at the Sawmill Playhouse for only one week, with accessible sliding-scale ticket pricing, this is the perfect way to cozy up out of the cold and catch this professional production that award-winning director Dorian Lang describes as "a combination between Downtown Abbey and Dexter"! This Canadian documentary, on stage from March 28 to April 13, 2019, is directed by Gisela O'Brien with stage managed by Tippy Scott.

There are four main characters in the play which takes place in Manitoba 1910-1917:

Francis Beynon (early to mid 20’s) is a young, impressionable woman at the beginning of the play, who matures into a person of self-knowledge and confidence as she moves from her private, rural roots to the more public sphere of the Women’s Movement, dealing with associated issues such as racism and pacifism.

Lily Beynon (her older sister) seeks to protect and encourage her younger sister on their journey to a more urban setting which brings the excitement and fresh ideas of a new setting but also challenges her previously held and entrenched opinions.

Nellie McClung (early to mid 40’s), icon of the Canadian Women’s Movement in the early 1900’s, was a suffragette, politician and social activist in Western Canada.  In this play she is very much the public persona of the movement and mentors Francis Beynon, but must contend with her apprentice’s developing a mind of her own.

George McNair (30-mid 40’s), Editor of The Rural Review, journalist who doesn’t have a lot of time for the Women’s Movement but finds his developing personal interest in Francis may compromise his fixed position.

Two or Three women (any age) who have outspoken opinions on Francis Beynon’s articles written for The Rural Review.

Scenes from the script will be available for cold readings but the director will welcome prepared monologues as well.
