George Washington's student newspaper reviews developments since Deadspin's deep piece from last week on dysfunction between former Colonials AD Nero & former MBB HC Lonergan. Still no official feedback or comments from the university. The Hatchet did reach out to around 100 former GW student-athletes & the reactions were mixed. Former MBB student-athlete Larsen, who was mentioned in the Deadspin article says the allegations are "straight bulls--- [...] I felt the need to make sure the people at GWU who supported me and my teammates know that and there’s no truth to the allegations about me." Former Swim & Dive student-athlete Huffman, "We’d all heard that one, the getting drunk with student-athletes. It doesn’t surprise me that he was. I’m not shocked by it because there were other rumors out there about him that were honestly a little worse." More. (link)
Former Louisville/South Carolina MBB student-athlete Bowen has filed a racketeering lawsuit against Adidas alleging that the company's actions, along with those of other notable figures related to the recent MBB scandal, cost him a chance to play in college. Consequently, Bowen alleges, his earning potential and chance at being selected as a high pick in the NBA Draft were also damaged. The suit, which also names former Adidas exec Gatto, former amateur coach Code and former AAU coach Dawkins as defendants, states, in part that Adidas is guilty of "annually poaching the country’s top high school basketball recruits and chaining them to the Adidas-brand through increased market share in the ultra-competitive $25 billion athletic shoe market.” It goes on to contend that a money laundering scheme used intermediaries to convince players to play for Adidas-sponsored universities, adding: "All of this profit comes at the expense of Plaintiff Brian Bowen and other student athlete victims who, by virtue of the criminal scheme directed by Adidas and its lieutenants, lost their eligibility to play college basketball, lost their eligibility to receive financial aid necessary to continue their education, and lost the singular opportunity to develop physically and athletically into NBA draft picks at a NCAA Division I men’s basketball program." The suit was filed in the U.S. District Court of Columbia, South Carolina. (link)
Learfield has announced the additions of former Tennessee AD Hamilton and former IMG College SVP Potter to lead its University Partnership Group, which is responsible for developing Learfield's business relationships with universities and conferences. Hamilton will serve as executive vice president and lead the group, while Potter will serve as senior vice president. Learfield CEO Brown: "I’m very pleased to have these two respected executives join our company. I’ve known both of them for many years and have not only witnessed the great work they’ve done but also admired the manner in which they do their work. Both of these guys are highly respected throughout college athletics and beyond.” (link)
Ticketmaster and Fanatics have announced a partnership through which they will link their online marketing efforts and leverage combined data to sell tickets and sports apparel. Effective Monday, fans will be able to purchase tickets online through embedded links on Fanatics.com as well as the hundreds of league and team pages operated by Fanatics. Meanwhile, every purchase through Ticketmaster will come with $3 that fans can spend in the Fanatics network of sites. The extent of customer data that will be shared has yet to be disclosed, but Bloomberg's Novy-Williams notes the logic behind the partnership is simple: "If you’re buying a Boston Red Sox hat, you might also want tickets when the defending World Series champions come to town." Ticketmaster Prez Smith: "We’re always looking for ways to enhance the fan experience while simultaneously adding value to our partners. Partnering with Fanatics in this way is the definition of a win-win for us, for Fanatics, for our common rights holders and for fans.” (link)
The gymnastics program at UIC must raise $25.2M to endow itself for the long-term or it will be cut, according to UIC team captain Marden, who says that was the number communicated to the team by university administrators who are not interested in solutions involving year-to-year funding. Flames HC Nelson has expressed concern that the team won't be able to raise the funds by the March 15 deadline, saying that "we'd need some significant donors, and we don't have that right now." Eliminating gymnastics, which UIC announced it would do last summer, would impact 11 female student-athletes and 24 male student-athletes. The final meet for the women's team is scheduled for February 24, while the men's final meet is scheduled to take place on March 10. (link)
The Las Vegas Review-Journal examines the trajectory of UNLV's FB and MBB programs, especially with the introduction of the NHL's Golden Knights and NFL's Raiders to the city. In the first of a five-part series, the Review-Journal notes that it has been 28 years since the MBB program won a national title under former HC Tarkanian and 27 seasons since the school has made it to the Final Four. Meanwhile, the Rebels have achieved just five winning FB seasons in the past 30, and the program's all-time winning percentage of .401 places it 118th out of the 130 D1 FB-playing institutions. Former AD Rothermel, who lead the department during many of UNLV's most triumphant years, says the success during that time is easily explainable: "Jerry Tarkanian and his coaching staff. [Former FB HC] Harvey Hyde and his coaching staff. Resources obviously. Financial resources are the most important thing, because you can convert those to the other resources you need, including personnel.” Additionally, the NCAA regulations on how coaches' contracts could be structured weren't as stringent, as the Review-Journal observes: "If you wanted to structure a contract in which the basketball coach was promised 10 percent of the gate or a stack of complimentary tickets, you could do it without fear of NCAA reprisal." Full analysis. The Drake Group calls the latest round of Graduate Success Rate data, "Fake News." Points to four main flaws: 1) For a true assessment of institutional responsibility, ALL ATHLETES should be counted as Enrolled, and their graduation data should be disaggregated based on potential for exploitation.; 2) Ivy League and Military Academy athletes should not be considered as scholarship recipients but should be included as recruited or unrecruited "walk-ons".; 3) False counting of drop-outs; and, 4) The institution should be held responsible for athletes it recruits even if the athlete's sport is dropped. More. (link); The Drake Group has also released a position paper on student-athlete issues related to freedom of speech. It's a lengthy approach. One key recommendation, "When considering restrictions on athletes’ viewpoints expressed by speech or behavior, institutions should answer these test questions: (1) does the restriction prevent a significant material disruption of the educational environment, (2) is the prohibited activity directed at others (individuals or groups) causing harm or creating a hostile or chilling educational environment, and (3) are other reasonable time, place, and manner restrictions available that could satisfy both the school’s interests and the athletes’ interests." Again, more. (link)

Iowa State AD Pollard is working on contingency plans for a December 1 kick in the event Incarnate Word wins its first round FCS Playoff game & can't make the trip to Ames. Pollard: "Some folks have to make a decision this week. We've talked to multiple schools, and multiple schools have indicated that they'd be interested." (link); Ok, so here are the legit details of the potential Virginia Tech-Marshall kick on December 1: 2-for-1, $300K this year if the game is played. The Baltimore Sun's Barker reports former Maryland FB HC Durkin told the investigative panel that UMD Prez Loh didn't want Terps FB student-athletes speaking to the Walters group consultants who were tasked with reviewing the series of events that led to the passing of late student-athlete McNair. The university says such claims are not true, "Throughout both investigations, the university has been entirely supportive of gathering input from our student-athletes and listening to their concerns. Our president would never stand in the way of obtaining the facts." More. (link)
New Mexico State MBB AC Anwar has been mentioned in news reports in connection to a prostitution ring sting in Dallas from when he was on the North Texas staff. Former Nicholls State AC Terry was arrested in the case, however, Anwar has not been connected to any wrongdoing, Aggies AD Moccia: "New Mexico State has received no formal complaint or any specific allegation of misconduct on the part of (Anwar) during his time at New Mexico State or at his previous coaching position. Prior to hiring (Anwar), we made appropriate inquiries as we always do and found no indication of any specific involvement on his part relating to the situation at North Texas and that was through discussion with the previous and current (North Texas) athletic director. [...] I have talked to (Anwar) and his status is unchanged. All we have seen is the reports in the press and (Anwar's) denial of any wrongdoing." (link)
Among other FB HC carousel rumors, ESPN's Rittenberg says he's hearing ECU may not make a FB HC change. USA Today's Wolken comments, "Adam makes a point in here about East Carolina, which is just spinning its wheels right now. Dave Hart is running the ECU athletic department from his home in Knoxville and will also make the permanent AD hire. How can you change coaches with the dysfunction above?" (link)

(link); ESPN reporter & opinionist Fagan won't be signing a new deal to stay at the Worldwide Leader. (link)
Arkansas has suspended FB student-athletes Pulley and Curl for socializing with members of Mississippi State's dance team prior to the team’s loss in Starkville this past weekend. Both are not expected to play in the Razorbacks' game at Missouri on Friday. FB HC Morris: “They will not be here today or yesterday or any part of this week for unacceptable behavior - actions that are completely unacceptable to anything we're about.” (link)
A study led by an assistant professor of sociology at Stony Brook found that late-night tweeting, specifically between 11PM and 7AM local time, had a direct correlation to a decrease in points scored, minutes played, and shooting percentage for NBA players playing in a game the following day. Brooklyn Nets HC Atkinson on the importance of sleep: “Now it’s top of the priority list. How we’re traveling, whether we’re staying over, not staying over, when guys are going to sleep on the plane, when we’re scheduling practice the next day on a long trip. It’s a big piece to this 82-game puzzle that we’re all still trying to figure out.” However, Los Angeles Clippers Player Beverley isn’t buying the results of the study: “Hey man, next thing you know, if you don’t jump over a cat three days before the game, you ain’t gonna make two layups.” (link)
Cal AD Knowlton starts his latest notes to Golden Bears fan with thoughts & prayers for those impacted by the wildfires in the state. Knowlton goes on to detail a report from consultant Marts & Lundy to help share the strategic plan in Berkeley. Knowlton: "Their report on Cal Athletics followed a broader analysis of the entire university, and offered a number of valuable observations, including the need to invest further in our development unit and build stronger trust with you, our alumni and donors, over time that will likely include some changes to our fundraising philosophy. The authors note that our strengthening partnership with the campus and the support for Justin Wilcox and the direction of the football program have helped create momentum and enthusiasm among our stakeholders, and they foresee tremendous philanthropic potential. Along with the Collegiate Sports Associate report issued last spring that examined our department overall, we have two recent studies from experts that reaffirm some of what we know, but also will help shape our direction moving forward." (link)
New Texas A&M-Corpus Christi AD Palumbo interviewed by KIII-TV, points to "building resources" around both hoops programs as a key early initiative for his tenure with the Islanders. On the potential addition of FB: "Not at the moment, but I never say never. When you talk about starting a FB program, it's a very expensive proposal when you talk about scholarships, facilities, coaches. [...] Right now we're focused on elevating all the programs that we currently have." (link)
Pushback on the new potential Title IX/sexual misconduct rules suggested by the Department of Education comes from Association of Title IX Administrators Executive Director Sokolow: "There’s this huge asymmetry between male responding parties who can afford lawyers and female reporting parties who can’t. For a lot of those victims -- male, female or otherwise identified individuals -- who know they can’t afford good legal advice going in, if the other side has high-paid lawyers, I think it’s going to create a powerful incentive to not persist." More. (link)
TV/OTT: Liberty Media CEO Maffei on the future of sports rights, "I think there’s a good chance that big digital platforms like Amazon will be bidders for content, bidders for sports rights. They increasingly already are. I think it’s quite likely that Amazon will be bidders for us for our content, Formula One. I suspect they will be bidders on other forms of sport content too. Particularly global makes a ton of sense. They’re global players. […] There is going to be a big fight. These tech platforms all want to have a stronger position. The war is going to be in the home." (link); A Hollywood Reporter survey finds cost & availability of content as the main reasons people cut the cord. Key takeaway: "Sports get the credit for keeping many people with their pay TV operator. However, sports’ low ranking in both viewing and importance could indicate it is much less of a factor for at least half of consumers than previously thought." (link)
The debate over integrity fees flowing from gambling entities to leagues & conferences continues as NBA Commish Silver tells Axios, "If we're going to spend $8 billion this year producing those games, I feel that we should receive a share of the proceeds from a business that's being generated exclusively on our games." Las Vegas sports book operator Kornegay on how the space is evolving, "I met with the leagues and the NCAA and the FBI back [years ago] and told that we are on the same side because integrity is our product as well... We have an audit department that... looks at everybody that's wagering, looking at what type of background they have, source of funds and anything like that. We want to work with the league to protect the game but the integrity process has been going on forever." (link)
Also Noticed: Georgia and Georgia Tech come to an agreement that neither team will destroy property at either stadium no matter who wins the rivalry moving forward. The Yellow Jackets have done significant damage to the hedges at Sanford Stadium in the past after beating the Dawgs on the road, just as Georgia teams have ripped up the turf at Bobby Dodd Stadium in retaliation.
