This WEEK
From the Head...
At Chinthurst it is essential that as staff we are constantly updating our knowledge, particularly in the ever changing world of IT. This term the staff have been receiving INSET training from our experienced computing lead George McWilliams. Mr McWilliams is a trained CEOP Ambassador, which enables him to educate our staff with regard to online safety. Later in this academic year we will be holding an information evening for parents on this topic. You will also see a new feature appearing monthly in the Chronicle starting after Christmas. This article will be written by Mr McWilliams and filled with useful advice and tips to help support parents at home.
Recently Mr McWilliams led an INSET with staff, focussing on what children are doing on line with specific emphasis on the Apps they are using. He discussed the benefits this technology brings, what the children like about these apps and the hidden dangers. It is important that we educate the children in our care, there are so many worthwhile aspects of the online world and our children will continue to use it, but we all have a duty to help them stay safe. It was alarming to discover how many popular Apps currently in use the staff did not recognise. Many of the teachers went home after the INSET and spoke to their own children about what they were using on their phones, computers or tablets. I would strongly advise that all parents do the same. The NSPPC website www.nspcc.org.uk/.../keeping-children-safe/online-safety is a great source of information, as is the ‘think you know’ site www.thinkuknow.co.uk. Both have areas of guidance regarding Apps and crucially how to set up privacy settings to help keep your child safe.
Best Wishes

Early Years and Lower School Christmas Performances
Please note that refreshments prior to the Early Years and Years 1 & 2 Christmas performances will be served in the dining hall, not the Lower School hall. The performances will still take place in the Lower School hall.
Off Games Procedure
With the season of colds and illness upon us, please could we remember the procedure for children who are off games. If you wish your child to be off games, then please email Mr Mussellwhite, smussellwhite@chinthurstschool.co.uk, on the morning stating the reason for their absence, or send a written note with the child, that should be given to Mr Mussellwhite first thing in the morning. Children should not be turning up for lessons just saying they are off games. Many thanks for your help.

The Adventures of Early Years..
|
|
This week Reception B have been learning about subtracting one. First we had to create 10 playdough balls. This required manual dexterity to manipulate the playdough along with accurate counting…which is tricky when the playdough balls like to roll around! Then we all channelled our inner superhero and became ‘The Hulk’. The children had to ‘Hulk smash’ a playdough ball to subtract one number each time and then check their answer. As you can see the children were fabulous at finding ‘ The Hulk’ within them, whilst using a tangible manner to understand the concept of subtracting one. Well done Reception B.

This week Reception have been exploring changes to consistency when you add heat or cold. We were very brave to see how the cold had ‘set’ the jelly, and we could hold it over our head! The best fun was eating our wibbly wobbly jelly and singing the jelly song.

This Week's Other Stories..
|
|
Year 4 enjoyed a fantastic trip in the well-timed winter sunshine to Kew Gardens. We learnt about the climate and geographical features of the rainforest, together with the many ways that the plants native to the rainforest benefit our daily lives. We also explored other areas of the garden including the temperate house and the hive, and some of us had to gather all our courage as we climbed 18 metres high up into the tree tops!
A great day was had by all! Make sure to check back next week for the children's recounts of the day.

Year 5 Experience Hinduism
|
|
Year 5 were lucky to receive a visit from Dr Dixit today. She came in to talk to us about Hinduism and Diwali, which has just been celebrated around the world.
We found out lots of interesting facts such as there are over 33,000 Gods although there are 3 main Gods (Brahman the creator, Vishnu the protector and Shiva the destroyer of evil). The children handled lots of artefacts, saw the inside of a Hindu mandir (temple) and experienced the delights of henna being painted onto their hands. Normally this is done to girls just about to get married, but boys can have a simple pattern too.
The children had the opportunity to ask lots of questions, many of which were very thoughtful and showed great respect and insight for such an important religion. Our thanks go to Dr Dixit for sharing her knowledge with the children with such enthusiasm.

Chess Players
Last Monday a group of our Chess players visited Walton on the Hill Primary for some friendly games. Mr Samuels, who organised the get together, was very impressed with our children and commented that they are a credit to the school.

In this week's church assembly, we were treated to performances from Daniel on the piano and Louis on the guitar. Then Year 2 told us what they had learnt about London this term. They have certainly packed in a lot! The class described some landmarks in London they had visited and read out some imaginary postcards that Paddington might have written to his aunt in Peru. Year 2 then enacted the story of the Great Fire of London, sang "London's Burning" beautifully, told us what things they would have saved if they were caught in the Great Fire and finally, showed us some of their beautiful artwork. Thank you Year 2!

Football:
Under 11 A v Barrow Hills (County Cup Final) Lost 0-1
The backdrop of Charterhouse School was the setting for the County Cup Final as the boys in green looked to make history. A compelling, tight and exciting game unfolded with both teams very evenly matched and the boys giving their all. Unfortunately we conceded a good goal and despite us increasing the pressure and hitting the post and bar, we just could not get that crucial goal. A superb performance from the team and an incredible journey to the final. You should all be immensely proud of your performances – well done!

Netball:
U10 & U11 Girls Netball v Milbourne Lost 11 - 10
All the girls should be proud of themselves this week. The match could have gone either way and was incredibly close the whole way through the game! The girls panicked a little at the beginning of the match and as a result, passed the ball carelessly and not accurately. Once our nerves had settled the girls slowed down and started to use better passes and great interceptions! Moving forward the girls must use a bounce pass if their opponent is taller than them and also take free passes quicker! Overall a great match! Well done all! KAH
