Dear Parents,
This is a good week. The kids are out of school and in such good moods, ready to help with all the holiday preparations. But before we all rush out of town to grandma’s house, I wanted to get this out to remind you about an important event coming up. Chi Alpha continues to be a weekend of ginormous proportions. Throughout the years, students have been impacted by this simplistic, yet profound experience where kids gather in host homes to study the Bible and see what it has to say about some rather important subjects. Maybe when you were a kid your church had something similar. It was probably called DiscipleNow. Well, that’s what Chi Alpha is – a weekend to help students move further down the road towards being more fully devoted followers of Christ. The date is set: January 17-20. But another important date is looming large, coming at you right after the Thanksgiving break. On Wednesday, November 28, we will have our Chi Alpha Sign-Up Rally. On that night, junior high and high school will come together in the Venue at 7:00. This will be their very first opportunity to register for Chi Alpha – and at the same time save a few bucks. Hopefully, you’ve already received the latest edition of the Woodway Weekly with an enclosed registration form and other details. If your son or daughter is not receiving the Woodway Weekly (published quarterly), then shoot us an email to get them promptly on the mailing list. You can also download a registration form online. The weekend will cost $55, but everyone who signs up that night can go for $49. Remember it’s the Wednesday right after Thanksgiving – don’t let it slip up on you.
December has a couple of choice dates worth your consideration. First off, our annual high school girls retreat called Elements is set for December 8-9. Registration for this weekend is going on right now. Our girls minister is Meredith Bristow, and she is putting together a special event that the girls will enjoy and benefit from greatly. Lots of details on our website. Also, our Christmas Hayride is happening on December 19. All Wednesday night activities will be transferred out to country with back-to-back hayrides for junior highs from 6:00 – 7:45 and high school from 8:00 – 9:45. Our meeting place will be at the New Day Family Fellowship (1861 Church Road). The hayride will depart from there and head out to Rick and Carolyn Brophy’s beautiful country place. Nothing like some hot chocolate and a Christmas caroling service around a bonfire to get you into the spirit of the holiday.
Other important stuff: We still have a few spots available for our Spring Break Ski Trip. Look here for details. Our summer mission trip to Namibia is sold out, but we still have room for Belize. Get a form and return to our youth staff with your deposit to reserve one of the remaining spots. Our last 7:37 of the fall will be on December 2. We will reconvene on January 27.
Here’s some interesting reading for you to check out. A middle school teacher from New England writes a short story about some fictional junior highs and just how much has changed for them in the past ten years. It’s called Middle School 2008 vs 2018. Scroll down a bit to find it. I think it will be worth your time.
I hope you and yours have a blessed Thanksgiving holiday. As always, please know we stand with you as you help your kids navigate these interesting times.
Deo volente,
Bob Johns
