GFMD Calls for Broader Inclusion of News Media and Journalism in Internet Governance
After participating in the 13th global Internet Governance Forum (IGF), which took place from 12-14 Nov. in Paris, GFMD released a statement calling on the global Internet governance community to recognise the need for broader inclusion of journalism and the news media community within the IGF and wider Internet governance ecosystem. It also encourages the MediaDev community to be more engaged in Internet governance bodies and processes.

Second Annual MediaDev Symposium Held at IGF 2018

GFMD joined CIMA, DW Akademie, ARTICLE 19, IMS, and UNESCO to host the second annual Media Development and Internet Governance Symposium on 12 November in Paris during IGF 2018. The meeting featured presentations by Guy Berger (UNESCO) and Elodie Vialle (RSF), and also saw us officially launch the issue paper we wrote collaboratively over the past nine months.

The event centered around Ishara Denasakara ( Vikalpa) and other voices from the Global South who shared their experiences, and discussed the increasing number of digital and political challenges to their work. We concluded by exploring ways to support them and where we should focus going forward. Read more about our experience at the IGF here.

GFMD Participated in UNESCO Open Discussion on AI
On 15 November, UNESCO partnered with the Internet Society and Mozilla to host an open discussion on "Harnessing Artificial Intelligence to Advance Knowledge Societies and Good Governance." GFMD's Michael Oghia joined Samhir Vasdev ( IREX) and other distinguished panelists to discuss how human rights intersect with AI, such as with access to information and freedom of expression.

RSF Launches Declaration on Information and Democracy
A commission chaired by Christophe Deloire, the secretary-general of Reporters Without Borders (RSF), and Nobel peace laureate Shirin Ebadi released the International Declaration on Information and Democracy. It promotes democratic guarantees for the freedom, independence, pluralism, and reliability of information at a time when the public space has been globalised, digitised, and destabilised.

Web Foundation Unveils
Contract for the Web
Pioneered by the inventor of the World Wide Web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the World Wide Web Foundation recently launched their Contract for the Web. It established principles that governments, companies, and citizens around the world should commit to in order to help protect the open Internet as a public good and a basic right for everyone. GFMD met with representatives of the Web Foundation at IGF 2018, and is in the process of signing on.

UNESCO Releases Internet Universality Indicators
UNESCO unveiled the updated version of its Internet Universality Indicators at IGF 2018. The indicators are a framework meant to help assess individual countries' levels of Internet development and progress on implementing the ROAM principles – that the Internet should be based on human Rights (R), Open (O), Accessible to all (A), and nurtured by multi-stakeholder participation (M).
