Travel to Tanzania this Summer

A special trip celebrating 10 years of collaboration in the Mara region.
Applications are now open for our 2019 summer Tanzania study abroad trip! The ELN invites students from all backgrounds and levels of study to travel to the Mara Region of Tanzania to explore community development through up-close, personal engagement with community leaders, girls and women, and the social entrepreneurs who are committed to improving their lives.

This special anniversary trip will celebrate 10 years of traveling to this beautiful and complex part of the world that shares my name (Mara). As detailed in our recently released (free) e-book, I first visited Mara Tanzania in 2009 in hopes of collaborating around a school for girls in the nearby village of Kitenga. Since then, I have joined colleagues, groups of students and community members in exploring interests and possibilities related to collaboration and engagement.

The impacts of our trips have been quite extraordinary, with students working on projects, discovering new interests and passions, and supporting their own academic and professional goals. Danielle Nerber ’18 explored her interest in girls’ menstrual management and educational attainment in her final project, which led to raising funds and starting up a reusable pad sewing project in the area. This project will be featured in our 2019 trip, along with other community development initiatives focusing on girls’ empowerment, sustainability and education. The trip will also include a 3-day safari through the Serengeti and opportunities to take in the rich culture, food and hospitality of this spectacular country.

Students from all majors are welcome to apply and will have the chance to develop projects of interest that connect with their own areas of focus and programs of study.

Sincerely,
