Happy Thanksgiving

Hi Everyone!
I hope you have all had a wonderful fall and are ready for the holiday season. We have been travelling for 3 months. We started with a show in Grand Rapids MI, another in Madison WI. Then Paducah KY, Jacksonville FL, Fredricksburg VA, Virginia Beach, VA, back to Florida to West Palm Beach, Oklahoma City for some College Football, and finally Houston TX.

A trunkshow for the Pioneer Valley Quilters in Springfield MA, a wonderful retreat in Waitsfield VT and finally another terrific group of quilters at the Champlain Valley Quilt Guild in Plattsburgh NY. Needless to say, it has been a whirlwind. But we thoroughly enjoy meeting quilters everywhere and seeing all the wonderful projects they are making. The weekend after Thanksgiving we will be in Brattleboro VT - Strolling of the Heifers Quilt Expo. This is our final event for the year and we are happy to share it with other Vermonters.

So here is what you will learn in this Newsletter:
1. Using ombre fabric in any quilt project.
2. Use a flannel panel to make a cozy pillowcase.
3. Our latest patterns and panel options.

2019 Schedule is filling up. We are in Arizona, Quilting at the Lake Retreat in Lake Havasu January 10 and 11. There may be space in my Talking Points class if you are in the area. A full 2019 schedule will be in our next newsletter.

Read on and enjoy!

Happy Quilting!

By using Northcott;s Stonehenge fabrics, we are guaranteed access to the same fabric for the foreseeable future. There are custom videos for each month, available only to members. Using Ombre Fabric in Any Quilt Pattern
For those of you who have not heard this term before, ombre refers to fabric that changes color across the width of the fabric. It has been fun finding ways to use them. These are Northcott's Stonehenge Ombre collection that will ship mid December..
This pattern is called Cornered. It uses 8 of the Northcott Ombre fabrics.
By playing with different existing quilt designs in EQ7 I have come to realize the following:
1. An ombre is a way to purchase fewer fabrics. For example, if a pattern calls for 8 fabrics ranging from yellow thru orange, you only need to purchase one fabric that covers that range of fabric and then just cut the pieces from the color value you need.
2. An ombre can be used whenever a pattern calls for a strip, width of fabric. Use it as the directions indicate and you will find your quilt has an amazing light/dark color effect.
3. Using ombres in any shortcut sheet technique will give you surprising but pleasing results..
4. Try an ombre with a panel or 2 for a quick bargello.
Chain Gang using regular Stonehenge on the right and ombres on the left.
Ribbon Candy using plain on the right and ombres on the left.
Make a Cozy Pillowcase with a Flannel Panel
I am sure many of you already know how to make a pillowcase. Here is how to use your panels for the body part. Because flannel is so thick, I do not put the flange/band on these pillowcases.
For each pillowcase cut:
1.    One panel
2.    One 15” strip for the cuff
1.    Press the Cuff in half lengthwise with wrong sides together. Unfold and place on work surface right side up with raw edges at top and bottom and selvages at sides.
2.    Place the Panel right side down on top of the Cuff, lining up the raw edges at the top and pin.
3.    Starting at the bottom of the Panel, roll or fold it until it is just above the center fold line of the Cuff.
4.    Bring the bottom edge of the Cuff to the raw edges that are pinned together. Re-pin, lining everything up, forming a tube that encloses the Panel fabric.
5.    Sew along the pinned edge using a 1/4 inch seam, and being careful to avoid stitching the rolled up Body fabric.
6.    Reach inside the tube and pull the Body fabric out.
7.   Press well from both ides. See how the seam is fully enclosed inside the cuff.
8.    Trim to square corner at both sides.

9.    Fold in half with wrong sides together. Pin, then stitch along side seam with a scant 1/4 inch seam allowance.
10.    Turn inside out, now with right sides together, and press. Stitch with generous 1/4 inch seam allowance, enclosing the raw edges of the first seam.
11.    Repeat with the bottom edge. Notice the side seam is a little off-center. This is to reduce the bulk in the corner when turning the enclosed seam. This will not be evident when the pillowcase is finished and a pillow is inside.
